Dems Find Challenger for Ehrhardt Seat

Former town councilor Robert Craven has been picked to oppose Republicans State Rep. Larry Ehrhardt and Sharon Gamba in the fall.

The Republican Party will have a Democratic challenger for General Assembly's District 32, representing North Kingstown. The Rhode Island Democratic Party's chairman has picked local lawyer Robert E. Craven to face off against Republicans State Rep. Laurence Ehrhardt (the incumbent) and Sharon Gamba, according to the Providence Journal.

Both of the state's Republican and Democratic chairmen had 24 hours following Wednesday's candidates' filing deadline to find candidates for unchallenged seats. According to the Providence Journal, one out of every five incumbents in the General Assembly is running unopposed. Only the Democrats chose to seize the opportunity and plugged in the hole for the District 32 seat, where the only candidates were two Republicans.

Craven formerly served on the North Kingstown Town Council from 1994 to 1996. Additionally, he was a former prosecutor and one-time legal counsel for the state Board of Elections. He is the current town solicitor-probate judge in Charlestown.
