UPDATED: Suspicious Substance Brought to NK Police Department

A North Kingstown resident brought a letter with a white powdery substance inside to the North Kingstown Police Department.

Multiple agencies and departments responded to the North Kingstown Police Department Monday afternoon after a letter containing a suspicious substance was brought to the building.

According to Sgt. John MacCoy of the NKPD, a 56-year-old North Kingstown man brought a letter from his sister (who lives in New York) to the building after discovering a "white powdery substance" inside the envelope. Police asked the man to exit the building and the Department of Environmental Management arrived at the scene to secure the letter.

DEM officials transported the package to the Department of Health for testing. Police are awaiting test results before reviewing the contents of the sister's letter.

The Warwick Fire Department's special hazards unit assisted the NKPD and North Kingstown Fire Department at the scene as well.

The NKPD plans to pursue charges against the sister in conjunction with authorities in New York. The matter is currently under investigation by the NKPD, Rhode Island State Police and the FBI.
