Police Log: Stalking, Shoplifting, Smoking

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the North Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Sunday, Nov. 3

1:23 p.m. – Police assisted NKFD at a garage fire at a house on Phillips Street. The owner of the house told police he had started a fire in a wood stove in the garage at about 11 a.m., then went outside to split some wood. A passerby notified the owner that the garage was on fire. The fire marshal said the fire appeared to have broken through the stove's flue and that the flue and the chimney itself had some cracks and structural damage, which cased the fire.

2:46 p.m. – Police arrested two 19-year-old Narragansett men for shoplifting after they left Walmart without paying for merchandise. According to the police report, a Walmart employee saw one of the men take automotive headlights out of their packaging and conceal them under his sweatshirt while the other stood lookout. They were stopped by Walmart employees after they left the building without paying. The total amount of the recovered merchandise was $54.20. In addition to the arrests, Walmart requested that both men be issued no-trespass orders.

9:55 p.m. – Police arrested a North Kingstown man, 59, after he was pulled over on Post Road after a routine check turned up a suspended car registration. Checks on the man turned up a suspended license. Police made the arrest and had the man's car towed from the scene.

10:32 p.m. – An employee of Dunkin' Donuts on Post Road told police a customer had been making inappropriate comments and staring at her. Another employee said on Oct. 31, the customer used the bathroom for several minutes and a suspicious substance was left on the toilet seat. Police talked to the customer in the parking lot and he denied behaving inappropriately. Later, the store's manager asked police to issue a no-trespass order to the man, but when police attempted to reach the man using the phone number he'd given them, it turned out to be the wrong number. At the time the report was written, the no-trespass order had not been delivered.

When he didn't respond to the calls this day, she drove over and parked her car at the end of his driveway. Police told the woman her behavior had become harassing and they would press charges if it continued. They also issued her a no-trespass order for the man's house, at his request.
