Police Log: Man Charged with DUI, Leaving the Scene after Head-On Crash

The following arrest and incident reports were provided by North Kingstown Police. They do not indicate a conviction.

DUI
Police charged Michael C. Geoghegan, 76, of 49 Madison Ave., North Kingstown, with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident March 14 after he allegedly smashed into another car head-on on Brown Street and fled the scene.

Police said the crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. and police responded to find a heavily-damaged Toyota Camry in the road. The driver of that car told police he was hit by another car that was driving in the wrong lane.

Several witnesses at the scene said they saw the suspect car leave Gillian’s Ale House and “drive all over the road,” according to a police report.

It didn’t take police long to track Geoghegan to his Madison Avenue address thanks to debris left at the scene and witnesses who remembered the license plate.

Police found Geoghegan still in his car in the driveway with what appeared to be fresh and heavy damage to the front end.

Geoghegan reportedly told police that he had a few drinks at Gillian’s Ale House and when asked if he was in an accident, he said “maybe, but I don’t know what happened,” according to a police report.

In addition to the DUI charge, police charged Geoghegan with refusing a chemical test and leaving the scene of an accident.

He was also cited for driving without proof of insurance and several traffic violations.
