Police Log: Joy Ride Gone Wrong & Broken Glass

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the North Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Monday, July 8

12:46 p.m. – A North Kingstown man came to the police station to report a road-rage incident. According to the man, on July 5 while driving north on Post Road, he was cut off by a black Subaru station wagon. The station wagon did it again when the NK man turned onto Frenchtown Road. While stopped at the traffic light at the entrance of the Stop & Shop shopping center, the NK man said the Subaru driver pulled up next to him, got partially out and started yelling and swearing at the NK man, finally throwing a Gatorade bottle. The NK man turned into the shopping center and the Subaru continued eastward. The NK man gave police the Subaru's license plate number, which was tracked back to a Subaru, but the man declined to pursue the matter further, only wanting the incident to be documented.

1:58 p.m. – The manager of Gregg's Restaurant on Quaker Lane told police she had fired an employee that day for repeatedly trying to pursue a personal relationship with a colleague. She asked that a no-trespass order be given to the former employee.

7:11 p.m. – Police were called when an employee of Electric Boat was electrocuted in an industrial accident. According to the report, the employee, a 22-year-old man from Hopkinton, was reloading a 460-volt stud gun when he felt a shock travel up his left arm. He had been wearing protective equipment. NK rescue was on the scene and took him to Kent Hospital. He was released at 11 p.m.

8:55 p.m. – A North Kingstown woman told police she thought her ex-boyfriend threw a rock at her car while she was driving on Devils Foot Road, although she did not actually see him throw it. The ex-boyfriend denied the charge. The woman's car registration was expired, so police had her car towed from the scene.

11:01 p.m. – Police arrested Nicholas A Dailey, 20, of Ten Rod Road, on charges of vandalism and disorderly conduct after he punched his fist through a glass window at his house after coming home "highly intoxicated and extremely belligerent," according to the police report. Although the person who made the 911 call had said, "He punched the window," when police arrived, another occupant of the house said he leaned against the window causing it to break. A third occupant said that was correct but after being questioned about the 911 call, she admitted Dailey had punched through the window, cutting his arm. She said he did not assault her. Dailey was taken into custody, booked at the station, and released on personal recognizance.

1:03 a.m. – Police arrested Joel F. Diez, 19, at Jasmine Circle, for driving while impaired and underage possession of alcohol after he was pulled over on Tower Hill Road near Winsome Drive for speeding. Police clocked him going 88 mph in a 50 mph zone. Diez acknowledged he'd been driving too fast. He said he didn't have proof of auto insurance in his car. Police noticed he smelled strongly of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. Police also noticed a "yellowish fluid" leaking out from underneath the passenger seat. Further investigation turned up a silver can of Coors Light on the floor in front of their passenger seat. Diez admitted he was only 19 years old. Diez told police he'd had "five, six beers max." Police found an open can under the passenger seat. He failed the field sobriety test and two breath tests. Police gave Diez a District Court summons for the two charges. He was also cited for speeding, landed roadway violations, operating a car without evidence of insurance and have an alcoholic beverage.

6:25 a.m. – Police arrested River Barnes, 18, of Old Baptist Road, and (earlier) Marcel Edmonds, 28, of Post Road, for vandalism after an incident that followed a car accident June 24 in Quonset. Barnes and Edmonds decided they wanted to "joy ride" in Quonset after a playing basketball. They sped around, reaching a speed of a "buck twenty" according to the report. By then they were heading to Davisville Road and couldn't stop. They hit the guard rail, significantly damaging the car's front end. They pushed it to the parking lot at Wide World of Indoor Sports. According to the report, they decided to try to fake a car break in to alleviate trouble ("heat") they may get into over the accident. They found some 2x4s and used them to shatter the car's windows. Barnes also allegedly took out the car stereo face plate and CD case. The car was owned by a third person. After an investigation, the two men turned themselves in.
