NK Woman Pleads No Contest to Prostitution Charge

A woman who allegedly advertised her services on a website pleaded no contest to a charge of prostitution.

A North Kingstown woman charged with prostitution pleaded no contest this week in Kent County District Court.

Shumika Gunter, 28, was allegedly prostituting herself out of her apartment on McConnell Court in North Kingstown. Police found an online advertisement for a woman named "Leslie" who described herself as "curvy sweet dark chocolate women [sic]" for men looking for a "sweet seductive companion." Officers cross-referenced the number in the ad with a previous investigation and determined the number belonged to Gunter.

At the North Kingstown Police Department, Gunter allegedly told police that she was going to beat the charge anyway and continue to do what she was doing.

At her court appearance on Tuesday, Gunter was ordered to pay court costs – the standard $93.50 for any case. Her case will be filed for one year. As long as Gunter has no other arrests in the next year, the case would be eligible for expungement.

A hearing for Gunter’s ability to pay court costs is scheduled for Jan. 29, 2013. At this time, a judge would also check with the prosecution and Gunter’s lawyer about her compliance with the law.
