NK Woman Charged With Prostitution

A North Kingstown woman was arrested on Oct. 19 on charges of prostitution.

North Kingstown police have arrested a North Kingstown woman on charges of prostitution after complaints from neighbors and an online post advertising her services.

Shumika Gunter, 28, was allegedly prostituting herself out of her apartment at 9 McConnell Ct, Apt. 101. Police became aware of the situation after several “concerned citizens” complained about possible prostitution activity in the area of McConnell Court and Merrill Lane.

Police found an online advertisement for a woman named “Leslie” on Backpage.com in the escort section of the website. Her ad reads:

Hello gentlemen.... Are you looking for a sweet seductive companion? If so contact me @ [number removed] I cater to the older men only..... Don't be shy I'm waiting xoxo , please no private calls I'm 5'7 curvy sweet dark chocolate women

Police were able to cross reference the phone number in the ad with a previous investigation and determined the number belonged to Gunter. North Kingstown police, in conjunction with East Providence police’s vice unit and a South Kingstown officer, worked undercover to make the arrest.

According to reports, an East Providence detective called Gunter to arrange a meeting. During the call, monitored by the NKPD, the woman gave her price of $160 an hour for her services and scheduled a meeting for later that afternoon.

When the detective arrived at Gunter’s apartment, she was allegedly not wearing pants and told the officer, “Sorry I’m already buck ass naked.”

Once in her bedroom, Gunter asked the detective if he wanted the “full hour” and told him that there was a $100 per half hour option. When the detective asked her if he got everything for the half hour, she said, “Yes I do everything except for greek.”

The detective gave the code word and officers entered the apartment and arrested Gunter. At the police station, Gunter allegedly told police, “This is the only illegal thing I do” in regards to the prostitution and that she “has others do her dirty work.” Additionally, she allegedly told police that she was going to beat this charge anyway and would continue to do what she was doing.

According to police, Gunter’s children were at a friend’s house down the road. Previous information from a source indicates that Gunter has a family member watch her children while she conducts her prostitution activities.

Glendaliz and Saralee keep your head up, held high. There are still some people in this town, believe it or not, that know and understand where your coming from. I sometimes have to scratch my head too when I hear some of the comments on Patch.

lolol...sooooo predictable that this would happen in a housing project...stop building these dumps and crime will decrease.
fedupinnk October 28, 2012 at 12:43 PM
I live in that so called "dump". It's not a dump they are brand new buildings and many of the people that live there are hard working single mothers that are trying to take care of their families. It's the politics and the screening process thats making it the way it is. I've lived in crossroads for many years and it has never been as bad as this past year.

Can't we all just get along :) life is to short
fedupinnk October 28, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Having sex for profit is against the law "PROSTITUTION".
fedupinnk October 28, 2012 at 12:55 PM
It has nothing to do with paying taxes. It has to do with the law. You might not care what goes on in your nieghborhood but many law abiding citizens do.

Completely agree. Couldn't have said it better myself.

My hair dresser lives in one of those apartments. She is a wonderful, hard working single mother. Don't make blanket statements about people because of where they live.

My comments about taxes have NOTHING to do with race! I have never been called a racist in my life! I too have been on food stamps & public health care when I was in my 20's. I was fortunate to receive those benefits for about a year. @fedupinnk you shouldn't be living in crossroads for MANY years, crossroads & yourself should be working harder to provide stability that will allow for you to be self sufficient. I thought that Crossroads was there to get you back on your feet and move on as quickly as possible so they can do the same for others in need. What taxes are residents of crossroads paying to NK? Car? Who is paying property taxes for the many residents? Is Crossroads? I don't know the answer, it is a question, but I believe I have read elsewhere that there are no taxes being collected & that the many children that attend our schools amount to a large burden placed on the rest of the town. I am not blaming the people of crossroads, I am blaming the system. Crossroads or the state,(if no tax revenue is coming into NK for this development), should have to contribute to the costs of educating & the services provided to all residents,& not leave it to the other residents of NK to flip the bill. All of us have to do our part and help our neighbors, and we do. However, if we are going to help with the assistance, we should be able to voice our displeasure when someone receiving that help spits in the face of the law and proclaims they will continue to break it!
MeanE October 29, 2012 at 01:20 PM
Is it racist that I would rather have the children with a family that could provide for them without resorting to breaking the law and selling their body for money? Go ask someone like Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys how he feels about his mother who was a prostitute while he was growing up. He may be making millions in the NFL now, but it can't alleviate the pain, stigma, and neglect that his mother brought on him by doing this very same. Please don't pull the card out, when it is not necessary. I am white, I understand there are racist people in NK and everywhere else. However, just as you don't want others to judge all the residents of Crossroads the same way. Please don't generalize all residents of NK as extremely racist!

I know from a fact....where in NK heavy Domestic violence occurs. Where even police has been called to a standard residence and police has sided with the wrong side.
concern citizen October 30, 2012 at 05:26 PM
Stop judging... iknow firsthand great families who reside there. This is a family tragedy... and NK needs to excercise more racial and social concern and sensitivity. When someone says they should kick her out .... there are no single apartments there... you actually are requesting to throw a mother and her children into the streets and back to homelessness.NK is very classicist....I do not reside there..but do not throw everyone under the same blanket. BTW.... how many affordable rentals are in North Kingstown..... Yes, excatly.... please all you self righthous people i hope you never get to be a victim of Domestic Violence, unemployment mental or physical ailments and we have a lot of back up financial support in case life does not go according to your plans. then again perhaps you should walk a minute in their shoes and see what would you do.Prostitution is not legal, neither should be bullying people for having to use assistance and provide for their families
concern citizen October 30, 2012 at 05:35 PM
thank god there are smart educated and open minds in this town. Really. I came here more than a decade ago.... and besides financial status is a place where everyone under upper middle class , non Caucasian is looked over the shoulder. You bet i do not belong to either of those and i do have a decent t middle-class life.stop isolating people. Not every family is all white perfect two professional parents working and driving a "beamer" or better car and residing in their Hallmark kind of a neighborhood. My kids have grown in NK and they are understanding how far from reality the bubble of NK is. Keep up the good work to all mothers single or not who teach TOLERANCE, and educate children in abundance of respect and altruism.

Thank you. It happenD to me too.. at the police station here. My abuser grew up knowing many of the guys who are law enforcement agents now....They did not escort my abusers further than end of mys street where at that point could have turn around for more abuse. Police ask him to sleep it off at his parents. Women resource center also DISCOURAGED me on filing... not enough evidence.... i decided to do it all myself....this is how women and children get treated, and hurt some times killed.. This is why Crossroads is a necessity. a New beginning...sad this young mom couldn't take advantage and prosper, has nothing to do with the rest of residents of Crossroads as an agency. Please get educated before posting hate

MeanE, spoken like a true suburbanite. Are you related to this Scrooge guy: GENTLEMAN #1 At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir. SCROOGE Are there no prisons? GENTLEMAN #1 Plenty of prisons. SCROOGE And the Union workhouses? Are they still in operation? GENTLEMAN #2 They are. Still, I wish I could say they were not. SCROOGE The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then? GENTLEMAN #1 & #2 Both very busy, sir. SCROOGE Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course. I'm very glad to hear it.
Politics Sheriff of NK October 30, 2012 at 06:20 PM
GENTLEMAN #2 Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude, a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?' SCROOGE Nothing! GENTLEMAN #1 You wish to be anonymous? SCROOGE I wish to be left alone.

Folks, the above passage which you all should read shows that "the poor" have been a public policy issue for centuries. And there are always those who want to just let "the poor" stew in their own juices. I agree that accountability is good for all involved, those receiving some help and those providing it. Criminal activity should be disqualifying of course. But seriously, NK is a wealthy town and there are kids from families who were not forced by well-off suburbanites to dwell under an overpass, and instead had a decent roof to live under, who go on toward doing great things (and paying lots of taxes for those who think of "the poor" as simply a money issue).

How much is too much? If crossroads paid taxes, from what I can tell, they would only have to pay $50,000/year for doubling the capacity. They have not paid taxes for 16 years. There have been 50 children, living there, and that will double. $14,000 x 100= $1.4 million. My contention is that crosssroads just spent many millions on this development, what's wrong with building in covering the taxes that go along with it? I am not being hateful or racist. I am glad there are services for those in need. However, I also think that if you are convicted of a crime, you should lose your privilege and someone more deserving should be given an opportunity!

hi MeanE -- I asked a member of the NK Town Council this question, and I was told that, when Kingstown Crossings was approved, the town manager and school committee testified at the State House that NK "didn't need" Crossroads RI to make any Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) to help cover the cost of educating all of the new children. So, Crossroads RI got a waiver. I say it is time to life the waiver and make Crossroads RI help pay their clients' share. I'm sure the school department could use that exta $1.4 million. This trumped-up notion that everyone in NK is a wealthy, white racist is nonsense. Many of us are just middle class working folks who grew up here in the 60s and 70s and care about keeping our town as a nice, safe and quiet place to live, the way we remember it.
OrangesPoranges November 05, 2012 at 08:01 PM
Nk is far from wealthy -- witness all the empty storefronts on Post Road (and even Wickford these days). For as many nice homes as there are in Pojac Point, Quidnessett and Wickford, there are just as many modest homes, duplexes and trailers in Davisville, Belleville, Hamilton, Allenton. Perhaps you meant to post on the Barrington Patch.
MeanE November 05, 2012 at 09:41 PM
OrangesPoranges - I couldn't agree with you more regarding this notion that everyone in NK is wealthy. I live .66 miles away from Kingstown Crossings in Davisville. I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination. From the Independent in May of 2011 - "Based on Embury’s estimate that the 46 units would generate around $40,000 in new taxes, Wilcox expected the taxes for the 58 units could exceed $50,000 that Crossroads would need to come up with. “The fact is we don’t have a lot of revenue to support what that tax bill would be,” said Wilcox. “That’s a lot of money. I get that there are voices opposed to this, but the fact is the duly-elected Town Council has seen fit to push this forward.” http://www.independentri.com/local/article_f22055ce-9752-53e2-a6ab-790fff0fc578.html?_dc=240437313681.46835

She states that Crossroads doesn't have a lot of revenue to support the tax. I find it interesting that they were able to come up with $26 million dollars for the project, but they can't come up with a measly $50,000 a year to offset the $1 million plus that it costs to educate the children that live there? In addition, I am glad that the elected officials on the TC decided that it was OK to turn away this money. Wonder how many of the incumbents on tomorrow's ballot pushed this forward? In addition, I have yet to see where this Bill 6060 was ever approved.

Anyone heard the term Tax Credit...... Well.there was a lot of different sources of funding.... Contributing on making this new buildings a reality.
concern citizen November 05, 2012 at 10:22 PM
There is a great deal of wealthy families in NK.Please the avg median household income is over 70k/ year....For the middle class american...this is well above reality.Minorities are not welcomed in all circles. When a white hpmeowner in NK says they live in NK since the 60's...that right there tells the story. How many professional minorities are homeowners in this town.Of course is not everyone....but as Ihave experienced. residents of NK.do not openly welcome different looking neighbors. White,black,Asian,latino.....PLEASE.blue collar workers looking over the shoulder more educated and accomplished counterpart?Yes!THIS is a very much white and middle highclass comunity with very little tolerance to diversity.Unless you are a cult well traveled educated citizen you will not notice it. One can't see what one does not know.Open your eyes.
MeanE November 05, 2012 at 10:37 PM
Understood, that's my point! If there are many different sources of funding, these sources should be able to contribute to the cost of services in North Kingstown as well.
MeanE November 05, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Concern - You are correct, unfortunately minorities are not welcomed in all circles, just as unfortunately whites are not welcomed in all circles. You act as if you have to be a minority to be poor and qualify for assistance. Concern - Do you feel as though living in Kingstown Crossing and receiving the subsequent programs and services is a privilege or a right? Do you feel that residents that break the law should be allowed to reside in these new dwellings? I don't care if Shumika is white, black, purple, or orange; if you break the law you should not receive the privilege of residing there any longer. I am sure there are MANY candidates that would love the opportunity to reside at Kingstown Crossings that will abide by the law. My eyes are open, I understand that racism exists. Are your eyes open to those of us that have to pay property taxes in this town, that are not wealthy, are law abiding citizens, and view people not as of a certain kind but as part of humankind? As I have said, I was on assistance in my 20's for a little over a year, but I worked hard, lived in duplexes for most of my life, and bought a modest home that leaves me pay check to pay check. Being a white male, I certainly don't face the daily racism that still exists today. However, I am not racist or intolerant because I disagree with what this woman did and said, and the system that is in place regarding Crossroads and the tax burden it places upon NK.
