NK Police Log: Woman Charged With Felony Shoplifting from Walmart

Information about the following incidents was supplied by the North Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Melissa B. Tanguay, 22, of 815 South Rd. in East Greenwich was arrested Sept. 18 at 10:07 p.m. on a felony charge of shoplifting from Walmart.

Walmart employees noticed Tanguay acting suspiciously and putting items into her diaper bag, including baby formula, Ferrero Rocher chocolate, pecans, caramel apples, string cheese and other snacks. Tanguay allegedly paid for the items in her carriage that weren’t concealed and continued past the registers, where she was confronted by an employee.

According to reports, she was initially cooperative with employees until one of them began to call police. She allegedly fled the building, leaving behind cell phone, diaper bag, jacket and merchandise.

Police were able to identify her as Melissa Tanguay after running her plate numbers and discovered she had been arrested for shoplifting in 2011 and 2012. Based on the mug shots, the Walmart employees were allegedly able to positively identify her as the woman who shoplifting the items.

Later that night, Tanguay turned herself in and allegedly told police she stole the items out of necessity because she could not afford them. Because this is her third shoplifting incident, she faces a felony charge.
