Morning Blaze Sends Two to Hospital: VIDEO

Residents claim blaze was caused by a candle.

Police say a fire at 27 Navy Dr. this morning was caused by a gas grill, but residents claim a candle started the blaze.

The fire broke out at 9:51 a.m. in one of the buildings four apartments. North Kingstown Fire Department, along with crews from Warwick and East Greenwich responded, knocking the fire down in 20 minutes.

Robert Hazard, who lives in the apartment and was there at the time of the blaze,  said there were 11 people in the structure at the time.

Police Lt. Joseph Hart said the fire was caused by a personal gas-powered grill in the living room. Hazard and other residents claim the fire was caused by a candle.

At least two people were transported to hospital from smoke inhalation from the fire.

Fire Chief Fenwick Gardiner described the apartment as a "a complete goner." He said they were going to condemn the building, which was slated to be demolished soon to make way for the .
