Local Firefighters to Go Bald for Children's Cancer Research

Firefighters will shave their heads to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation on March 25. So far they're still shy of their $35,000 goal.

Later this month, firefighters from across Rhode Island will gather at Whiskey Republic in Providence and shave their heads to support children's cancer research.

The firefighters have been collecting donations over the past few months and on March 25, they'll face the razor -- and give a big boost to the St. Baldrick's Foundation along the way.

Alan Weaver of the North Kingstown Fire Department said last year, more than $30 million was raised across the country through the various head-shaving events held throughout the year.

So far, $21,386 has been raised towards the $35,000 goal for the March 25 event at Whiskey Republic.

Weaver said St. Baldrick's Foundation is different from other organizations in that all the money being raised goes to support children's cancer research. Teams are still looking to raise money right up until the event, which is being hosted by the East Providence Fire Department.

Twelve teams are signed up for the event, including firefighters from East Greenwich, Middletown, Bristol, Barrington, Smithfield, East Providence and North Providence.

As of March 20, the Bristol Fire Department is leading the fundraising race with $4,961 raised so far. North Kingstown is nearing its $6,000 goal and is right behind Bristol with $4,435 raised.

With a few days left to go before the event, team members are hoping for a successful final push to reach the $35,000 goal.

The St. Baldrick Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

The fundraiser will run from 5 to 10 p.m. Whiskey Republic is located at 515 S. Water St., Providence.
