Hurricane Sandy Keeping NK Firefighters Busy

North Kingstown's firefighters have been responding to call after call since 2 p.m. when winds from Hurricane Sandy began to pick up Monday. 

"There's a host of downed trees, limbs and wires," said Fire Chief Fenwick Gardiner Jr. "It all started slowly and began to increase around 2 p.m., which is when they predicted the winds to pick up."

Calls this afternoon included a fallen tree that caught fire from downed wires on Pendar Road, burning electrical wires and more. Among the calls was the failure of part of the roof at Custom Design in Quonset, located on Commerce Park Road. According to Gardiner, Hurricane Sandy's winds have torn a portion of the building's roof from the structure. The owner was made aware of the problem and will address it when the weather permits.

Gardiner also stressed that residents should stay off the roads unless it's absolutely necessary. Several roads in town are closed due to fallen trees and limbs.
