DUI Suspect Tells Police He Was Just Trying to Find "Cougars" at End Zone Pub

He was charged with driving under the influence and issued summonses for refusing a chemical test, speeding, not having an inspection sticker and not operating interior lights during a traffic stop.

North Kingstown Police charged a 32-year-old North Kingstown man with driving under the influence June 27 after he was stopped for speeding on Post Road at around 10:30 p.m.

Police said Ryan J. Churas, 32, of 604 Devils Foot Road, was clocked driving 57 mph in a 35 mph zone and didn't initially stop for police, driving instead to the parking lot of Anderson's Dive shop, turning off his lights, continuing behind the store until he reached a fence and couldn't go any further.

Churas then partially fell as he suddenly emerged from the car, police said, and told police "we are just trying to get to the End Zone Pub" and continued to say "we" even though nobody else was in his pickup truck, police said.

Churas, who smelled like alcohol, could not stand still, spoke nonstop and told an officer that he was just trying to find "Cougar [expletive]" for the night and was just kicked out of the All American Bar because "all of the older men were jealous of him," according to a police report.

When asked if he had been drinking, Churas told police that he had two Coors Lights at the All American and did a "pre-game" at his apartment by drinking a six pack.

"He also stated that he doesn't think it is fair that people are not issued their own personal breath machines because how else would they know if they are too drunk to drive," the report stated.

Churas reportedly failed a field sobriety test and became combative once taken into police custody.

He was charged with driving under the influence and issued summonses for refusing a chemical test, speeding, not having an inspection sticker and not operating interior lights during a traffic stop.

He was arraigned by a justice of the peace and was released on personal recognizance.
