Driver Who Topples Telephone Pole Charged With DUI

The accident on Post Road near Huling Road caused a power outage and traffic backup Friday evening.

Rhode Island State Police arrested Christine M. Cardi, 39, 244 Sachem Road, North Kingstown, for driving under the influence after she allegedly drove her car into a telephone pole on Post Road near Huling Road Friday around 8:45 p.m.

"She was traveling north on Post Road when [at Huling Road she] struck a Verizon pole head on. The collision caused the pole to sever, falling across the roadway and obstructing all lanes of travel. There was a second accident at the scene when a vehicle was traveling north on Post Road and struck downed wires causing the operator to lose control and rollover. No injuries were reported at the scene," said R.I. State Police Sergeant Robert J. Carnevale. 

The accident cause traffic delays on Post Road and the downed pole caused a power outage in the area.  

Cardi was charged with DUI, first offense, .15 or greater. Her blood alcohol content tested .213 and .207. 

She was held for Saturday morning arraignment by a justice of the peace.
