Letter: Sheehan Was Instrumental in Overhaul of Public Records Act

One resident praises Sen. Sheehan's role in the passage of a major overhaul of Rhode Island's access to public records.

Dear editor,

Being able to see public documents is a basic rule of good government. This past spring the . The bill increased the number of records that come under the act, and decreased the number of excuses officials can use to prevent people from seeing public records.

Our own state Senator Jim Sheehan (North Kingstown and Narragansett) deserves much credit along with House sponsor Representative Mike Marcello for getting this landmark legislation passed into law. The APRA is the kind of law that doesn't grab the big headlines, but it's an  important part of making government more open, transparent and accountable to taxpayers/voters of our state.
