Letter: Preserve the Charm & Character of NK

Rickey Thompson is one of several Independent candidates for Town Council this year.

To the editor:

Together with other Independent candidates, I am running for North Kingstown Town Council under the “SaveNK” banner. Here’s why.

Twenty years ago my wife and I decided to make North Kingstown our home. Through the years our annual property tax increased, growth and development rose; all the while I had assumed the actions and expenditures of our elected town officials would improve NK while protecting the quality of our lives.

Over the last few years my optimism and assumptions have changed. I’ve experienced firsthand the countless undesirable actions by the Town Council and decisions implemented without regard to residents’ factual concerns and objections.  While attending the meetings, I’ve progressively observed the majority of our Town Council members harden as they take a position of resistance without tolerance. Recent issues and decisions have included wasteful school department and firefighter lawsuits costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars; the lack of consolidation which would allow for current and future savings; the lack of vision advancing the continued decline of our Post Rd business district; the unsafe and potentially unhealthy placement of a 40-story turbine in a residential community and earlier consideration of the placement of a second turbine in the area of another residential community and continued consideration of zoning changes to allow expanded commercial development abutting residential areas outside the Urban Service Boundary and in areas preserved as open space.

As residents are at the top of the town organization chart, we are in dire need to seat a Town Council that will be fiscally responsible while listening to and respecting resident concerns.  As such, I’m convinced that we need a Town Council that will lead with integrity while ensuring that we move in a positive direction without regard to party demands or consideration to special interests.

My ideals and abilities are a few of the reasons that I am running as an Independent candidate for Town Council.  While I am not the definition of a typical politician, I do consider myself as a highly motivated and intelligent individual with the ability to get things done by including and working with all concerned.  I look forward to earning the votes of NK residents on Nov 6.  I also look forward to the challenges of building a better NK by holding the line on taxes, promoting NK as business friendly, working with all town departments and committees, ensuring responsible development, promoting Post Rd growth and most importantly; I will listen to the people of North Kingstown.

Please visit www.savenk.org  for additional information and my pledge to you.

NK doesn't need to be saved, it's fine!
Informed-Voter-NK October 10, 2012 at 01:46 AM
Water, please. The Town council and planning (whom they appoint) are DESTROYING this town so they can feed it to their developer buddies. Hawkins being one of them. There are violating their OWN comprehensive plan on a regular basis and we know why that usually happens. $ I have no idea who this Rickey Thompson is, but his position is totally correct.

I agree with Informed Voter. I am very happy the independents have decided to run for the Town Council. Mr Thompson, Mr. O'Sullivan, and Mr. Maloney are are upstanding citizens in the community who want to preserve North Kingstown's quality of life and revitalize the business areas that have been long ignored. I don;t know how people can continue voting for others that so obviously have their hands in the pockets of developers and then complain down the road when there seems to be corruption and impropriety. These independent guys have my vote, no doubt. I want a Town Council to make informed and unbiased decisions, not like ones we have seen in the past. Unlike their competitors, I like how the three independents have a very clear and bold message on their website and look forward to continued openness and cooperation with the residents of NK when they hopefully are on the Town Council. North Kingstown would be well served by Thompson, Maloney, & O'Sullivan.
Dave October 10, 2012 at 03:02 PM
Scott, I would agree and would definitely add Tracey McCue and Dick Welch to those three for an honest hardworking TC. It's about time.
Concerned NK School Parent October 10, 2012 at 04:19 PM
@Dave & Scott I agreed with you about voting for the independents , I know too little about MS. McCue’s message (hope to find out more about her). I would NEVER vote for Avanzato or Welch. They along with 3 other SC members have caused labor problems that have resulted in multiple legal actions (one is against Dick Welch personally)more taxpayers $$$$$$$$. Dave and Scott I know will disagree with me. You have been defending Larry/Lynda/Dick ‘s bad decisions for months.
Informed-Voter-NK October 10, 2012 at 04:32 PM
Not to belabor the point, but if NK doesnt vote out ALL incumbents this time on the town council, then they have only themselves to blame for more deterioration, traffic, run-down post rd, while more commercial devel get approved for the buddies in the rural south end.

Meet Richard Welch, Democratic candidate for District 32 in the House of Representatives. By Samantha Turner October 26, 2010 Question asked: I'm a single mother with two jobs. Why should I vote for you? I care that you have to work two jobs to try to make ends meet. Any changes in the cost of living need to take you into account Pushing people onto the public assistance roles is not what I would be trying to do but rather training you to be able to hold down one good paying job with benefits so that you could spend more quality time with your family. http://northkingstown.patch.com/articles/meet-the-candidates-richard-welch-house-of-representatives-district-32#comments_listt To: Mr. Welch, your decision to fire 26 long-time custodians (many with over 10 years of service to NKSD) and make drastic cuts to the NKESP, even after they offered major concessions, has made many of them eligible for public assistance (also taxpayer’s money). You did this during one of the worst recession this country has ever seen. Not to mention the dissension that your self-serving decision to break the ESP has cause amongst your lowest paid employees. Let not forget the legal suits that have been generated (one suit is personally against you). More taxpayers $$$$$! You seem to favor confrontation over compromise. NOT A SIGN OF A GOOD LEADER! cont'

Just think Mr. Welch, if you don’t get elected to the TC, I heard you only have to work one more year at your two day a week job at the General Assembly to keep the state funded healthcare plan (paid for by RI taxpayers) for your life time.
NK Parent October 10, 2012 at 05:53 PM
Why are you re-posting your comments about Richard Welch in an article about Rickey Thompson? Once was enough and it has no place here.
seed and soil October 10, 2012 at 06:27 PM
So delighted to see the comments here in regard to the terrific, Maloney, O'Sullivan and Thompson independent team. These guys are in it for all the right reasons. Integrity, ethics, and a forward vision for the community that holds dear preservation/conservation values. These are three intelligent, level headed, balanced professionals with the educational and professional background to well serve. Also gratified to see the posts about Hawkins - the developer who is (IMO) motivated by selfish/personal business related reasons. So pleased to be assured voters see the facts. Hope everyone keeps in mind the incredibly poor judgement of the NKGOP in endorsing Hawkins whose Rolling Greens development proposals have been so hotly contested. The community has come out in huge numbers over and over again making clear their opposition to more unwanted/unneeded commercial sprawl. NO RT 2 Warwick in NK thank you kindly. Let's go positive, selfless, and truly community minded the next election.....support Thompson, O'Sullivan and Maloney at the polls!!

@NK Parent Simple.I don't agree with U & I don't agree with Dave's post about Welch. By the way, Dick never answer the question? So since Dave brought his name into the discussion I thought I give it another try. This blog is about Rickey, but other names have been mentioned. That opens the door for questions & opinions. Since you read my question before, why don't ask your friend Dick to answer the question. NK Parent What R U THE BLOG POLICE? Don't try to censure me!
Scott Madison October 10, 2012 at 08:16 PM
Completely Agree S&S!!
Informed-Voter-NK October 11, 2012 at 03:34 PM
CNKP its too bad this should stay on Rick Thompson, I support him. So you said you wont vote for avanzato or welch, does that mean you if you leave out the labor problems you'd vote for them? you support ceresi then?
Concerned NK School Parent October 11, 2012 at 05:18 PM
@ IVNK I support Mr. Thompson, too. NK Parent, Scott M., Jim L. & Dave are trying to affiliate Dick Welch with the independents. I would never support or vote for Ceresi/Avanzato/Welch. They have no creditability with me. The three of them, along with Page & Boscardin, have caused labor strife amongst the ESP that is resulting in numerous law suits. I’ve learned the ESP made over $1,500,000 in concessions. The SC asked for an arbitrator's decision. This decision offered major concessions and did not include privatizing the custodians. The SC rejected it- the report didn’t agree with what they had planned. Their agenda was to break the ESP. They have bullied and disrespected the very people who are with our children daily. The taxpayers have heard all year about the budget deficit, but the SC never asked the six figure administrators to take a pay freeze. Instead they gave out raises & merit increases and hired more administrators at very high starting salaries. Many of the contracts include automatic yearly increases. During the worst recession this country has ever faced, I just can’t understand this! Finally, did they actually expect the ESP to “roll over and play dead”? Their self-serving decisions are costing the taxpayers dearly; money that could be put towards the school and other town programs. Sorry, Mr. Thompson, when I realized what these three were up to, I had to comment.
Steve O October 11, 2012 at 10:40 PM
CNKSP, we get it. Dont be like NKGOP Watch and some others with the repetition thing, even when you're right you turn ppl away! About the custodian outsourcing, you say the following: "Their self-serving decisions are costing the taxpayers dearly" Well the decision to outsource and privatize that employee group SAVED taxpayers money (a LOT of it). And self serving are you KIDDING me? You think it is fun for the school committee to have to make hard choices?
Steve O October 11, 2012 at 10:42 PM
Gosh you guys had me off track. I SUPPORT these 3 Independents, we need change and that means new people. I will be voting FOR Rickey Thompson and the other two Independents for town council for certain.
Scott Madison October 11, 2012 at 11:09 PM
I don;t know why you keep pulling my name into this. I have only stated here on this thread that I support Rickey Thompson and his fellow Independents. I feel this town in in long need of a change. I have never associated Mr. Welch with anyone.
Ralph Crockford October 21, 2012 at 04:24 PM
I guess you like a 480' wind turbine in a residential neighborhood and consider that fine!
Ralph Crockford October 21, 2012 at 04:28 PM
I agree these independant candidates are for the people of No.Kingstown and will do what's best for all of us. They will not allow a 475' wind turbine to be built in a residential area and I kknow they have fought tooth and nail to stop the one that is currently being built. We can thank our incummbents for that fiasco vote independant for a bright future for NK!
NKhannah November 03, 2012 at 06:14 PM
@Ralph Crockford Actually I do consider a clean, efficient, renewable energy source a "fine" addition to our community. But I guess since it hinders your view of a sunrise and possibly draws your attention as your drive down rt 4 we should knock it down right?
Ralph Crockford November 03, 2012 at 08:54 PM
NKhannah please let me know how this monstrosity is contributing to NK other than damaging the skyline. We citizenz don't benefit since it wont lower our electric bill but will actually add to them. The only winner in this fiasco is the builder since he can profit from the excess electric power he sells to the power company. Do your homework and loook at the problems these turbines cause before you tell me how good they are. By the way if there is a problem with this fiasco don't be surprised if we end up paying to have it taken down!
