Obituary: George S. Porter, 88, WWII Veteran

George S. Porter, 88, of North Kingstown, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Providence VA Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Shirley E. Porter of North Kingstown and the late Alice B. (Caswell) Porter. Born in Farmington, Maine, he was a son of the late Nelson R. Porter and Annie E. (Stinson) Porter. 

Mr. Porter moved from Maine to Rhode Island in 1943. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. For 51 years, he owned his own business, George S. Porter Plumbing & Heating, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Kingstown and a Life Member of their Board of Trustees. He was a founding member of the South County Squares Square Dancing Club and served as their first vice president. He was a member of the former Washington Lodge # 5 and a current member of Mount Vernon Lodge #4 with membership in these organizations spanning 60 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. 

Besides his wife, he leaves his two sons, Gary A. Porter and his wife Elizabeth of North Attleboro, MA and Richard D. Porter of North Kingstown. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Sandra A. (Secor) Laney and her husband Charles W. Laney of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Ronald A. Secor, Sr. and his wife Katherine (Vincent) Secor of East Canton, Ohio, and Barbara (Secor) Greene and her husband David M. Greene of North Kingstown. Cherished grandfather of twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Madeleine (Porter) Stickney and Seldon N. Porter. 

His Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 21, 2014 at 11:00 am in The First Baptist Church of North Kingstown, 1135 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Thursday, March 20th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in THE CRANSTON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME of WICKFORD, 140 West Main Street, Wickford Village, North Kingstown. 

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 will be appreciated.
