Obituary: Elsie Martin Whyte, 89

Wickford's Elsie Martin Whyte has passed away at the age of 89.

The following obituary was provided by Cranston-Murphy Funeral Home.

Elsie Martin Whyte of Wickford passed away in her sleep at home on Monday, July 30 at the age of 89. She was the daughter of the late Royland C. Martin and Ada (Wright) Martin. She was the wife of Rollin C. Whyte, to whom she was married for 65 years.

Whyte grew up in Washington Park in Providence, graduating from Classical High School and the University of Rhode Island. She was also a charter member of the , , the and the North Kingstown Women's Club.

She worked at the North Kingstown Tax Assessor's office, and Christmas in Wickford. Whyte strived to connect people and bring positivity to any situation, a venture that became increasingly difficult as she lost her hearing.

Whyte is survived by her son Rollin (Skip) Whyte and two daughters (Nancy Whyte Sherman and Carol Whyte Rau). She was the fashionable grandmother of Meggan and Kendall Rau, Lara Whyte and E. Mason Sherman. She was the sister of the late Lois Martin Watson and George Martin.

Her Requiem Eucharist will be held on Monday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. in St. Paul's Church. A collation will immediately follow at the Wickford Yacht Club. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory to VNS, 14 Woodruff Ave., Narragansett, RI 02879 will be appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Cranston-Murphy Funeral Home of Wickford.
