Beaches of the Ocean State

A few more things to do on a relaxing summer day.

There are many reasons that Rhode Island is called the Ocean State, and I would like to share with you a few of my favorites.  Rhode Island’s beaches are one of the main attractions for school vacations, and a great place to spend a day with family or friends.

In North Kingstown, we have our own quaint and family-friendly , which – despite its reputation as a small and boring beach – has many things to offer.  Its low surf is a great accommodation for children, as well as the jungle gym and swing sets.  It has restrooms and a cold shower to rinse off in, as well as a large grassy area with picnic tables and a brand new bandstand.  Living within walking distance of the town beach, I have grown up always enjoying it, whether I am watching the July 4th fireworks, having a birthday party or just hanging out.

Roger Wheeler State Beach, also known as Sand Hill Cove, is another one of my favorite beaches.  It is family-friendly, with a mostly quiet surf and fun playground, but is also a great place for friends to hang out.  I love walking down the beach and finding unique shells and digging for sand crabs, a common occurrence at this beach.  I also love watching many local artists make elaborate sand sculptures, which you can find almost every time you come to the beach.

Scarborough State Beach is another favorite for teenagers, because of its intense waves and nice water.  I also recently discovered .  Another one of my favorite things about Rhode Island are all the perfect picture-taking opportunities.  Aside from all the beaches, there are countless areas with water views that are beautiful during the sunset, and even just in the middle of the day.

There is never a shortage of sailboats on the water, and Rhode Island’s picturesque landscape makes every day an exciting one if you have a camera ready to capture the moment.
