Taking The Polar Plunge This Year? Here's The Skinny

The New Year's Day plunge at North Kingstown Town Beach benefits the West Bay Y's Annual Support Fund and the NK Food Pantry.

It's unclear why so many of us feel compelled to throw ourselves into sea on the first day of a new year, but it sure is a nice thing for area charities!

North Kingstown's annual Polar Plunge at the Town Beach is no different. Participants are asked to raise money for the West Bay Family Y's Annual Support Fund, which helps provide camp opportunities and swim lessons for children whose families need financial assistance.

In addition, plungers are asked to bring canned food items for the North Kingstown Food Pantry.

The plunge takes place at 1:30 p.m., followed by a mass Zumba class across the parking lot in the Community Center at 2.

The Y will be selling commemorative long-sleeved t-shirts for $35 (two for $50), with all proceeds benefiting the Annual Support Fund.

The North Kingstown Soccer Club is one local organization that's really taken the plunge (sorry!) when it comes getting a lot of its members to participate. In addition to having a team of participants, the NKSC will have a hot chocolate stand at Town Beach, with proceeds going to the YMCA assistance fund.
