Christiana Layman, a recent graduate of Bay View Academy, has earned a medal from the American Association of Teachers of French for her excellence in the study of French.

The award was presented during the Academy's Class Day ceremonies last month in acknowledgement of her accomplishments in French studies, including her winning the 2013 AATF Outstanding Senior in French Award.

She was also recognized for her "exceptional commitment to the many cultures where French is spoken," the school said in a release.

A student at Bay View Academy in Riverside, Layman studied four years of French under the direction of Upper School World Language teacher Kathleen DePasquale.

She's also an athlete and artist, a member of the National and Rhode Island Honor Society and just one of 11 Bay View students to earn the school's Mercy Honor Award, which goes to seniors whose "attitude and behavior reverence human dignity, who create a spirit of hospitality and who pursue integrity of word and deed," the release stated.

Layman will be attending the University of San Diego in the fall.
