Harvest Festival at Smith's Castle

The Castle will come alive at our Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 19th (rain date Sunday, October 20th) noon to 4 pm, like it was "back in the day". Children and adults will enjoy the food, music, vendors, learning information from the farmers and Master Gardeners, John Austin displaying his equipment and videos on his Para-normal experiences and people can try their hand at quilting.
Our goal is to bring people of all ages together to celebrate history and harvest through a tour of Smith's Castle's four centuries of history, wonderful music and the age old coming together around the dinner table with delicious food. This is being offered in a beautiful outdoor setting, overlooking Mill Cove, before the cold weather comes.
Some of our vendors include: Blue Sea Jewels (Silver sea glass jewelry), Lovie and the Green Man (Colorful crocheted goods & herbal products), A Cabin In The Woods (Local honey- beeswax items, felted hats/bags, fine quality knitted items), Artist Pamela Reed, from the Wickford Art Association and her friends are painting pumpkins for us to sell, Our Kids Farm and Docent Jan Breault will have some jellies that you could use on toast, or put on meats for flavor and she will include the recipe. Check our website: www.smithscastle.org for updates to our offerings.
The first floor of the Castle will be open for touring, with Docents stationed in each room to answer questions and share some history of the Castle.
Docent Jan Breault located our hand-made dolls that represent each Castle “woman of the house” dressed in garb for her era in the Castle. They were made by a docent, with help from the fabric department of U.R.I., many years ago. We have come up with a way to “safely” display them and it should be of interest to our visitors.
Casey Farm will be running children's 1700's games and the petting of bunnies and chicks, Treasurer Gene Pouliot will be teaching people how to play Conkers (a chestnut with a rawhide lacing through it). The object is to try and crack your opponent’s chestnut. This year, not only will you receive the instructions for the game, but Gene will have chestnuts to purchase. 12:00 to 1:00 pm: Stop by the Sing With B tent and make a simple harvest music shaker with your child, to be used during the show and taken home! (these will be painted in rich fall colors, already attached to a piece of yarn and ready for the children to decorate with some fall stickers and fill will pebbles). This craft is for 2 to 3 year olds and up. Younger children will be given a child safe maraca to borrow (to shake or taste!) during the show. Then join Barbie at the sing-a-long at 1:00 pm to use your instrument (more information under musical groups). There will also be hoops and stilts to test your skill.entertainment:2 to 2 pm –Jesse Liam Band Their deep catalog of cover songs spans popular music from the 1950s (Everly Brothers) to the current charts (Jason Mraz).  Jesse is also the winner of 2012& Motif Music Magazine's Male Vocalist of the Year & 2013New England Limelight 1:00 to 1:45 Sing with B. A music craft and sing-a-long concert with Barbi Beyer ,2 to 4 pm Catalysis;is made up of five musicians that play a blend of music that could only be described as eclectic and diverse. This is a beautiful sounding as well as beautiful looking instrument.
