Slush and Snow and Ice, Oh My!

NKers woke up to less-than-desirable conditions this morning on local roadways.

Though smaller by comparison to the past month's winter storms, Tuesday's winter weather burst is definitely causing a ruckus on the roadways. The early morning snowfall has now turned to sleet and freezing rain, causing slick roads throughout the region.

North Kingstown did not go unaffected by the weather, unfortunately. According to the North Kingstown Police Department, officers responded to several minor accidents this morning. Fortunately, the accidents were "nothing major" and there were no reported injuries.

Tuesday's rain is also looking to worsen road conditions, as many North Kingstown streets have seen flooding. (Beware of Post Road at the Kingstown Mobil Station, Tarbox Toyota and from the Wickford Barracks down to the entrance to Wickford.)

The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency Director J.D. Smith is asking residents to help out "public works officials by keeping storm drains open in your neighborhoods." Smith also warns pedestrians to be mindful of sidewalks, as there may be ice under the snow.

The RI EMA also announced that weather conditions may cause roof collapse, due to the heavy rain and snow. According to them, the region is expected to get about an inch of rain before tapering off around midnight.
