NK Adopts New Budget, Turbine Updates & More

Today's five essentials.

  1. North Kingstown has a new budget. The North Kingstown Town Council unanimously passed its $95,189,232 budget last night. The budget will raise property taxes 46 cents to $17.31, keeps curbside recycling and the animal shelter, nixes eight vacant positions in the fire department, level funds the school department and institutes pay freezes for non-union town employees. Check back for our full breakdown of the budget later today.
  2. The North Kingstown Code of Appeals has moved to halt its decision regarding a 427-foot wind turbine at North Kingstown Green. Last month, the town revoked the building permit for the subdivision where the turbine is slated for construction. The permit was revoked after it was discovered that the necessary amount of deeds from all residents in the subdivision was not recorded. Currently, Mark DePasquale – CEO of the turbine's developer, Wind Energy Development, and property owner of the site of the turbine – has 12 of the 14 necessary deeds. The group will reconvene on June 15 at 4:30 p.m. at to give DePasquale time to gather the remaining deeds, at which point they will make a decision regarding the revoked building permit. ()
  3. In case you didn't get the memo in our 5 Things we posted yesterday, there's a  great event tonight.... Head over to Pelly's 19th Hole tonight from 6:30 to 9 p.m for a LINKS fundraiser. For $15, enjoy an evening with local vendors and businesses selling their fabulous products, appetizers, cash bar and prize raffle. Purchase your tickets at the Chamber of Commerce. Have a question? Call Maggie Skenyon at 742-0140.
  4. Sick of watching Boston sports? Check out the girls volleyball team as it squares off against our rival to the south, South Kingstown, at 3:30 p.m.
  5. Apparently the April showers didn't get the memo that it's now May. Yesterday's rain looks to follow us into today with a chance of showers throughout the day with cloudy skies as high temperatures linger in the upper 50s. Friday, expect partly sunny skies and a high of 65. As for Saturday, it'll be another mostly cloudy day with a chance of showers later on.
