Get Out: Fundraisers, Drum Circles and Playwrights

Five things to get you off the couch and out of the house this weekend.

Don't retreat back into a state of winter-inspired seasonal depression just because this week has been a little colder than spring should be. Patch found five fun activities to help you forget all about the most recent snowfall. 

1. The West Bay YMCA Presents "A Night To Shine" Benefit Dinner & Auction

Where/When: , 950 North Quidnesset Road, North Kingstown | Friday, March 25 from 6 - 10:30 p.m.

Why Go: Support the YMCA and local families on Friday with an evening of dining and dancing, complete with a live silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the West Bay YMCA's Financial Assistance Campaign, which provides assistance to less-fortunate local families for memberships, events, programs, swim lessons and after school childcare.

Auction items include a Red Sox package and a trip to Disney World.

2. The Courthouse Center New Playwright Festival

Where/When: The Courthouse Center for the Arts, 3481 Kingstown Road, West Kingston | Friday, March 25 at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 26 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday March 27 at 2 p.m.

Why Go: Support local writers and revel in their authentic prose at this year's three-day playwright festival. Featuring new works presented in a workshop format, the audience will get a first glance at some of South County's more talented writers' works. Pricing: $15, $20 and $22 per ticket.

3. URI's Winter Wellness Series Presents "The Spring Equinox Drum Circle"

Where/When: The Roger Williams Park Botannical Center, 1 Floral Drive, Providence | Saturday, March 26 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Why Go: Join the University of Rhode Island's Outreach Center as they honor the season and to focus on healing for the community and the earth. Using drums and rattles to center each other's energy, they will create a healing circle followed by a drumming journey to gain insight about this special time of year and each person's wellbeing.  

No drumming experience is needed. If you have a drum or rattle, please bring it. Some drums and rattles will be available to borrow.  Also bring a journal and pen.

This event will be run by Katharine Rossi who is a certified Shamanic practitioner and depth hypnosis practitioner through the Foundation of the Sacred Stream.

Pricing: Free, donations will be accepted.

4. The 11th Annual Evening of Champions Fundraiser

Where/When: , 200 Lt. James Brown Road, North Kingstown | Saturday, March 26 from 6:30 to 11 p.m.

Why Go: An annual benefit by the North Kingstown Booster's Club for the student-athletes from North Kingstown, the fundraiser helps earn funds to help vet out the high school's paradoxical budget cut and spiraling cost ratio.

North Kingstown High School continues to provide the very best in facilities, uniforms, equipment and training in support of its athletic programs. Much of this support comes from the Booster’s Club as it provides the athletic program with necessary items that the town can not afford to provide.

At a drawing, you could win prizes of $5,000, $1,000,$ 500, $200 or $50.  Winners will be drawn at the event and only 400 tickets, which cost $50 each, will be sold.

Pricing: $35 per person.

5. Sunday Musical at the Library Featuring Solati Trio

Where/When: , 100 Boone St., North Kingstown | Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m.

Why Go: The Solati Trio who will open this year’s weekly Sunday concert series. This week will feature Russian-born twin sisters violinist Sophia Herman and pianist Ludmilla Lifson. Both are graduates of the Leningrad Conservatory, the oldest and most prestigious School of Music in the former Soviet Union. After moving to the United States, Herman and Lifson continued their concert career as the Herman-Lifson Duo.

Joining them Sunday is cellist Hrant Tatian is a graduate of the world renowned Juilliard School of Music where he was a scholarship student of the great American cellist Leonard Rose. He appeared as assistant principal cellist with the St. Louis Symphony and as principal cellist of the Rochester, New York, Philharmonic.  Tatian performs on a 1786 Ferdinand Gagliano cello.
