5 Things: Treacherous Travel

Here are 5 Things to know for today, Nov. 23.

1. Today is the busiest travel day of the year, and the weather is expected to cooperate.

About 42.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, up for the third straight year and a four percent increase from the 40.9 million people who traveled one year ago, according to AAA Southern New England.

The vast majority of travelers — 90 percent — will be taking to the roadways as 38.2 milllion people are expected to cram Ameri a's highways, AAA said. Theroughout the east coast, that couple be a problem for many as a huge storm is expected to bring heavy rain and winds to much of the eastern seaboard.

This storm is expected to make travel difficult — even dangerous — up and down the east coast, from Maine to Florida. Travel advisories have been issued and travelers are being cautioned to wait until later in the day to hit the road, if at all possible.

2. Time is running out for any artists interested in teaching for the North Kingstown Arts Council. Proposals are due in early December for anyone interested in teaching during the Spring 2012 "Take an Arts Break" program, a series of classes in the arts for North Kingstown residents. Artists design their own classes. The arts council arranges teaching space, advertises, registers students and pays the instructors.

3. Kids are welcome to drop in at the North Kingstown Free Library to create a Thanksgiving Craft all day today. Materials will be available at the back table in the Young Reader's area. No registration is necessary. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

4. It's Thanksgiving tomorrow. That means turkey, pumpkin pie and football. Kick off the holiday by cheering on the local high school team in the annual rivalry game against South Kingstown. The 1-9 Skippers take on the 5-3 South Kingstown Rebels in the annual grudge match at 10 a.m. at the University of Rhode Island's Meade Stadium.

5. We're in for a stormy day across the region today. Heavy rains are expected to fall throughout the morning, tapering off to light rain in the afternoon. Winds will increase througout the day, reaching 20-30 mph, with gusts possibly as high as 35 mph. One consolation will be the afternoon temperatures, which should approach 60 degrees.
