5 Things: Joint Meeting, Okeanos & More

Five things to know for Oct. 17.

  1. It's going to be a tough budget season for North Kingstown. Head over to tonight at 6 p.m. for a joint meeting between the town council and school committee as the two bodies discuss next fiscal year's financial matters, including pension projections and expected shortfalls.   2. Quonset is about to get another big addition this morning as the deep-sea exploration ship, the Okeanos Explorer, arrives at its new home port at Quonset Point/Port of Davisville. The 224-foot-long ship is a state of the art vessel that has undertaken explorations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse will join National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco and URI officials in welcoming the ship at 11 a.m. today.
  3. Though the fate of has taken the spotlight lately, North Kingstown has another vacant elementary school within its borders. Superintendent Dr. Phil Auger and staff will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss the future of , which closed last year after declining enrollment and budget cuts. Anyone with feedback or ideas regarding the school is invited to attend Thursday's meeting, slated for 6:30 at Davisville Elementary.
  4. Congratulations to the North Kingstown High School football team, which nabbed its first victory of the season on Saturday over East Greenwich.
  5. Today's high temperatures will be in the upper 60s with mostly sunny skies before dipping into the 40s overnight. Tomorrow, expect mostly cloudy skies with a chance of showers and highs near 64.
