Beercan Racing at its Best

There are recurring thrills every summer:  fireworks on the 4th, warm ocean waters, hot sandy beaches, ice cream truck jingles, a cool Del's lemonade... And for sailors it's the start of summer racing series.  From the PHRF series hosted out of multiple yacht clubs to One Design races hosted by local fleets, there's always somewhere to race every week during the summer months.  Beer and smiles are unofficial requirements, along with an unnecessarily large crew ready to have a great time.

To kick off the season I visited the East Greenwich Yacht Club here on Narragansett Bay for one of their Wednesday Nights, which also doubled as a NBYA Super Wednesday.  Numerous EGYC boats participated as well as a few from neighboring clubs, all in the name of summer fun!  The light was golden and the company was terrific, not a half bad way to welcome summer.

The following weeks were spent at my local Wickford Yacht Club for their own Wednesday Night series.  I hopped aboard my parent's Nonsuch 30, Papa, which serves as possibly the best shooting platform out on the water!  It's broad, relatively dry, in the middle of the action, and comes with snacks and a drink after the windward mark.  Week one's rain and gray was pushed out of everyone's memory as the second week of racing saw beautiful sun and windy conditions!  Our racing was decent, consistently near the top of the fleet on corrected time, except our most recent last place finish.  Results here.  The more breeze the better we perform, so let's hope for some wind this upcoming Wednesday!
