The Hive Looks To Energize Lafayette Mills Complex

The Hive offers "coworking" space but founder Tuni Schartner sees it as a combination small-business incubator and community hub.

Tuni Schartner is bursting with ideas for The Hive, a new coworking space in the Lafayette Mills complex on Ten Rod Road.

The Mills has long fostered start ups and small businesses attracted to the loft-style spaces and affordable rents. But there was never a unifying theme and Schartner thinks The Hive is the answer.

"I see this as the nucleus for the whole complex becoming more of a community," said Schartner, a marketing consultant who has been a North Kingstown booster for years.

That nucleus includes space for anyone in need of a more formal work environment. There are four "offices" that are currently all leased (for $265/month, with a three-month minimum) or you can pay by the day, week or month for work space. There's wifi (of course). Heat and air conditioning are included and there's a kitchen.

Much of the furniture has come via "the community," as Schartner would say. In particular, McKay's Furniture has provided several pieces.

The office space happens to be located right next Ryan Park, where beautiful shady paths are just feet away. And the waterfall at the Mills is a great spot to go to clear the cobwebs from your mind if you're stuck on some work problem.

Already, GoSpressoRI, the coffee truck, makes midday visits Monday through Friday and Eddie's BBQ is there on Tuesdays for lunch. Schartner said more food trucks will be coming too, making the Mills a great spot for lunch even if you don't work there. Schartner envisions monthly Gallery Nights too.

For Schartner, it's all about making the Lafayette Mills a vibrant pocket of North Kingstown, and in that way, helping North Kingstown become a vibrant pocket of Rhode Island.
