New Sears Hometown Store to Celebrate Grand Opening

The new store has been open since January, but this weekend marks its official grand opening.

The new Sears Hometown store in North Kingstown will be giving away $10 gift cards to the first 20 customers on Saturday as part of its ribbon cutting and grand opening celebrations.

The new store has been open since January, but this weekend marks its official grand opening.

The store will host an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 29. Representatives from both the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce and the Town Council will be in attendance.

"We have the buying power of a large department store and the distinctiveness of an independently-owned retailer, offering our customers not only top-of-the-line products at the lowest prices but also superior customer service and a great in-store experience," said Thomas Iacobucci, owner of the Sears Hometown Store in North Kingstown.

With the departure of Lowe's from Quonset two years ago, the northern part of town has been without a place to buy large appliances. Owner Tom Iacobucci is looking for his Sears Hometown Store to fill that void.

The store is easy to navigate and has all that classic Sears merchandise you might expect: dishwashers, washers, dryers, refrigerators, mattresses, power tools, snow blowers, mowers, generators, and so on. Only not as many as you'd find at the mall-type Sears store.

That's where another powerful tool comes into play: the computer. Anything a customer wants, "if Sear’s has it, we can get it” said District Manager Ron Quinn.

That’s the point behind Sears Hometown, Iacobucci said. He owns the lease and fixtures, Sears owns the merchandise, he explained, making for a more neighborly feel.

Many of the items for sale are plugged in and ready to demo, from the treadmill to the vacuum. The mowers, too, can be taken outside and tested.

"We want to make sure you’re satisfied with what you get," Iacobucci said.

Iacobucci spent the last several years working as a contractor. With his children grown and gone, he decided to find something that was both easier on his body and played to his strengths.

“I’ve always been a handy guy,” he said. “I used to work in hardware when I was a kid. It kind of comes natural to me."
