(Breakfast) Bites Nearby

I'm on a hunt for the best of breakfast in NK!

I'll be honest, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, regardless of the time of day. While I may be a coffee snob, there's a soft spot in my heart for diner coffee in all its unassuming glory...especially when it's served with some good eats. Whether you're in it for the eggs, the pancakes or the home fries, North Kingstown Patch has the breakdown for you.

Best Bread: Whether you like it toasted or served up battered French-style with cinnamon and maple syrup, on the corner of Route 2 and 102 has some of the best bread in town. They serve up fresh, in-house baked white, honey wheat and raisin bread that is thick, chewy and delicious no matter how it's dressed up. Oatley's also wins my own personal category of best Benedict. They offer the traditional version as well as Eggs Florentine (with spinach instead of Canadian bacon) and Hash Benedict with their very own corned-beef hash mixed in. Be sure to bring your cash and patience because Oatley's is a cash-only establishment and can get very crowded on the weekends, especially when breakfast and lunch overlap after 11 a.m.

Best Pancakes: The on Post Road near the East Greenwich line takes this one, with Phil's of Wakefield following in a close second. Both places serve up some delicious, fluffy and moist pancakes without any of that over-greased crunch or under whipped flatness. The Nook edged out Phil's on account of variety. Stop by in the fall for their pumpkin pancakes!

Best Home Fries: This is a matter of great debate because everyone has their own opinion. For me and many of the people I know, you can't beat Phil's home fries. They use red bliss potatoes, leave the skin on and toss them with garlic, parsley, butter and black pepper before dropping them by the tub on the over-sized skillet. These little bites of heaven have the perfect crispy crunch on the outside and melt in your mouth flavor punch to follow. Phil's recently revamped their menu and are now serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as booze, so feel free to get a mimosa with those home fries!

Honorable mention goes to in Boston Neck Road for their low prices, quick service, and quiet atmosphere. Their menu is pretty standard as far as egg dishes, pancakes, and simple omelettes, but the food won't disappoint. There you have it, the low-down on where to go to meet those breakfast cravings head on.
