Bites Nearby: Tavern By The Sea

A hidden gem perfect for a date, special occasion, or late morning lazy meal right on the water.

In my quest to revisit favorite 'eateries' before departing this amazing town, few muster up fonder memories (and more drool) than , located in the heart of Wickford across from Wickford Market. My husband and I have shared romantic evenings, mornings and afternoons there. They accommodated my crazy, but loveable, family for my recent graduation with grace and style. They've provided the forum for friends and me to gather and recount a weekend's events over a Bloody Mary and some of the best pizza in town.

Tavern by the Sea is a full-service lunch and dinner restaurant open seven days a week at 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and until 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations are welcome and big parties can be accommodated. When my 20-person group swarmed their upstairs, they even allowed the out-of-towners to order steamed lobsters (ordered ahead of time).

The menu is just extensive enough with its appetizers, soups, a nice variety of salads, sandwiches, grilled pizzas, entrees and desserts with lunches in the $8 to $15 range and dinners in the $10 to $25 dollar range. For seafood lovers, try the calamari, crab cakes, tuna salad or sandwich (Mediterranean style with olive oil, roasted peppers and olives), cajun tilapia (one of my favorites, just spicy enough to make your nose run), or seafood special of the day. The grilled pizzas are thin, crunchy and topped to perfection. The sandwiches are served with as much aesthetic care as the entrees and the lobster bisque and clam chowder are both come with tasty chunks of real shellfish.

Located in a historic mansion on the protected harbor inlet, Tavern by the Sea offers a cozy ambience to go with your meal, whether you are enjoying yourself out on the deck or in one of the main dining rooms.  Sunday afternoons get a little busy, but trust me, the Bloody Mary's and Mimosas speak for themselves.  Tuesday night's offer a two-for-one, price-fixed menu. Visit their website for a free appetizer coupon.
