URI’s University Artist Series presents the premier of a new opera by composer Geoffrey Gibbs, offering a slice of scandal-filled RI history. Based on the play by Richard Vangermeersch, it focuses on Civil War hero and RI “Boy Governor” William Sprague and generations of colorful women connected to him. Gibbs mixes period music with his original work, performed by soloists, chorus, and Civil War reenacters, with chamber ensemble. Donations for restoring the State House portrait of William Sprague welcomed.
