NWR SYSTEM'S 108TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!

This year, on March 14th, the National Wildlife Refuge System itself will be celebrating the 108th Anniversary of its establishment. Along with the fact that that the National Wildlife Refuge System is the oldest and largest system of protected lands for wildlife in the world, in 2010 the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service began celebrating an important milestone in American conservation history - the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

To mark this momentous occasion, the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex is celebrating and you're invited to join us! Just for a start, the complex will be show-casing A Sense of the Refuge - a four-panel exhibit describing the history, people, wildlife, climate changes and special significance of the Arctic Refuge. Then, join us on SATURDAY, MARCH 19th, from 10AM - 4PM, at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center in Charlestown, RI for an all-day birthday celebration. To start the day, the complex's Piping Plover Coordinator, Erin King, will be speaking from 10AM - 11:30PM on the plight of the piping plover and what we can do to help. This will be followed by an afternoon of family fun complete with nature crafts, indoor and outdoor scavenger hunts, blue goose mobiles and birthday cake!
