Dozens Scramble for the Casey Farm Egg Hunt

Small but eager crowds find success in soggy meadows

SAUNDERSTOWN – Neither steady rain nor driving wind were enough to deter 75 plucky youngsters and their families from a spring tradition Saturday morning at historic .

Decked out in brightly colored rain gear and boots, they explored the barns, observed the chicks and other animals (no rabbits yet), and picked up hundreds of colored eggs from the fields as part of Casey Farm’s fifth annual Easter egg hunt.

“It was a lot less than the 220 who had signed up,” observed Adam Lowe, the farm’s education coordinator.

Farm staff had boiled and dyed an estimated thousand eggs. But the hunt served its purpose: providing a community event and promoting the farm’s summer camp and other programs, Lowe said.

The hunt, scheduled for 10:30 a.m., was delayed to accommodate latecomers slowed by traffic from another big event on Boston Neck Road that morning, the Jamestown Bridge 5K Run. (Editor’s note: Check back at 2 p.m. for a photo gallery from the 5k.)

The farm served up hot chocolate, brownies and other sweets to ward off the cold, and one shed housed a popular crafts table.

At 10:45 a.m., Lowe donned his chicken suit and opened three fields, geared to different age groups, for the hunt. After collecting their real eggs, the hunters were rewarded with the brightly wrapped chocolate variety.

Lowe said that in recent years, early Easter dates have brought better weather than late Easters, like this year’s.

“We seem to get more sunshine in March,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Wilson Park egg hunt was postponed until its rain date, Sunday at 1 p.m.
