Wickford Elementary School Sale Falls Through

The town of North Kingstown issued a release on Friday afternoon saying Mr. Weiss declined to sign the third extension of a purchase and sale agreement and "in all likelihood may not move forward."

The potential sale of Wickford Elementary School to developer Stanley Weiss, LLC., who had proposed the Wickford Inn and Conference Center, appears to have fizzled.

The town of North Kingstown issued a release on Friday afternoon saying Mr. Weiss declined to sign the third extension of a purchase and sale agreement and the plan "in all likelihood may not move forward."

"As it pertains to the upcoming Wickford Sewer Bond vote, this will have no material effect on the current estimated costs to commercial properties. If the Wickford Sewer Bond passes on Tuesday, we will have the opportunity to remarket the property as a more desirable sewered site," the release stated.

The Town Council authorized the Town Manager to ratify the third extension on June 2.

Weiss had planned to build a hotel and conference center and was reportedly going to pay $1.1 million and incorporate 30 to 40 hotel rooms.

Wickford Elementary has been vacant since its closure in 2005.

On June 17, North Kingstown voters will vote on an $11.5 million sewer bond question on the ballot which would finance the construction of sewers in Wickford. If voters were to reject those bonds, Weiss would have been looking at a costly septic system to get final project approval.
