NK's Polar Bear Plunge Exudes Warm, Community Vibe

According to the sign held up by Krystina Roll, the water temperature was 45 degrees Wednesday, Jan. 1, for the North Kingstown Polar Bear Plunge. But looking around, it sure seemed a whole lot warmer.

Partly that was the bathing suit attire sported by many on the Town Beach. But it was also the positive feeling that permeated the whole event.

"We're supporting the financial assistance campaign to help send kids to camp and swimming lessons and to help military families if they're deployed," explained Roll, aquatics director of the West Bay Y.

Participants were also encouraged to bring food items for the NK Food Pantry. At 1:30 p.m., they were off, into the water, an estimated 250 plungers.

Afterward, nobody would say it had been warm, but nearly everyone was smiling.

Happy New Year, North Kingstown!
