NK Food Pantry Reopens In New Home

The ribbon-cutting Friday brought together officials, volunteers, contributors, and clients.

Just about everyone in official North Kingstown turned out for the ribbon (label, really) cutting for the North Kingstown Food Pantry's new home at the Little Red Schoolhouse.

After many years at the North Kingstown United Methodist Church, the NK Food Pantry has taken over the historic building on School Street. The town leased the property to the food pantry last year and a combination of donations from companies including Dave's Market and Ocean State Job Lot, local fundraisers and donated skills, and countless hours put in by members of the board, made it happen, according to board chairwoman Karla Driscoll.

"It's been a culmination of community outpouring like I've never seen before," said Driscoll.

For Bonnie Smith, longtime director of the food pantry, the new space is "a dream come true."

She continued, "And the clients, I cannot tell you how happy they are. Our new location is within 70 percent of our clientele. And with the extra space, we will be able to offer things we've never been able to offer before."

The North Kingstown Food Pantry is located at 445 School Street. Stop by and visit.
