Four-Bridge Bike Ride to Start in NK

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority is sponsoring a 26-mi. charity bike ride on Sept. 15.

Written by Erin Tiernan

Cyclists will have the rare opportunity to pedal this September over four Rhode Island bridges: the Jamestown, Pell, Sakonnet River, and Mt. Hope.

The Jamestown and Pell "Newport" Bridges are typically closed to bike traffic, but will open for this special, charity bike ride entitled the "4 Bridges Ride."

The 26-mi. ride, sponsored by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, will take place on Sept. 15 starting at the Park & Ride on Rte. 1A in North Kingstown and finishing on the campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol.

All participants are required to register prior to the event, wear a helmet and obey all traffic laws throughout the course. While strict safety measures are in place throughout the course, no roads will be closed to traffic during this ride.

A 26-mi. ride of this nature requires tremendous planning and the cooperation of all seven communities, their police departments, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and State Police.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers for the 4 Bridges Ride
