Providence, RI – December 19, 2013 – Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees in Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA recently contributed $5,000 to the Providence Canteen, a service that provides extended incident rehabilitation for Fire, Police, State, and Federal Agencies.  For more information about the Providence Canteen or to make a donation, please visit www.providencecanteen.com.

“We are so proud to support the Providence Canteen,” said Joe Prazeres, Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee.  “These volunteers provide an invaluable service at a time when it’s needed most, for both first responders and victims of these incidents, and we hope that this donation will prompt other organizations and individuals to lend their support to help keep the Providence Canteen on the road for years to come.”

The canteen was founded as the Special Signal Fire Association in 1968 with a station wagon that would pick up hot coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts in downtown Providence.  In 1969, the Salvation Army joined with the Association to help improve the services to emergency responders, and so a Canteen Truck was purchased, responding to 12 major fires per year, and only in Providence.  Now, the Truck makes more than 550 runs every year.

Operated by volunteers and routinely used to respond to building fires, hazmat incidents, brush fires, police operations, searches, and training exercises, the Providence Canteen provides cold beverages and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee to first responders, as well as hot meals for responders on any scene that exceeds four hours.
