North Kingstown Free Library

Environmental injustices affect communities globally, across the United State, and within Rhode Island. These injustices include the disproportionate burdens of hazardous contaminants and other pollution by lower income, BIPOC, and other historically burdened communities. They also include a lack of access to decision-making processes, cultural harms, and more. Towards an Anti-Racist North Kingstown (TANK) is pleased to welcome Kate Mulvaney, Research Social Scientist, U.S. EPA-Atlantic Coastal Environmental Science <a tabindex="-1" href="https://null" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a>Division as our next guest speaker. In this talk, we will introduce what is “environmental justice,” a quick history of the environmental justice movement, some examples of injustices, and ongoing work across a slate of organizations to begin to address some of these injustices.

A stunning life of the iconic American artist, Keith Haring, by the acclaimed biographer Brad Gooch.
In the 1980s, the subways of New York City were covered with art. In the stations, black matte sheets were pasted over outdated ads, and unsigned chalk drawings often popped up on these blank spaces. These temporary chalk drawings numbered in the thousands and became synonymous with a city as diverse as it was at war with itself, beset with poverty and crime but alive with art and creative energy. And every single one of these drawings was done by Keith Haring.
Keith Haring was one of the most emblematic artists of the 1980s, a figure described by his contemporaries as “a prophet in his life, his person, and his work.” Part of an iconic cultural crowd that included Andy Warhol, Madonna, and Basquiat, Haring broke down the barriers between high art and popular culture, creating work that was accessible for all and using it as a means to provoke and inspire radical social change. Haring died of AIDS in 1990. To this day, his influence on our culture remains incontrovertible, and his glamorous, tragically short life has a unique aura of mystery and power.
Brad Gooch, noted biographer of Flannery O’Connor and Frank O’Hara, was granted access to Haring’s extensive archive. He has written a biography that will become the authoritative work on the artist. The Heifetz on Tour Residency Program is a collaboration between the JAC and the Heifetz International Music Institute. Since 2013, the program has brought world-class musicians to Rhode Island for a week of educational outreach and performances.
While in Jamestown, Heifetz musicians provide free demonstrations and one-on-one collaborations with local school’s string and chorus programs. Musician’s also perform free special rehearsal performances for organizations serving adults with developmental disabilities and to the senior center. Evening musicales in various venues across Rhode Island further showcase the talents of these globally acclaimed young classical musicians, culminating in a final concert performance at the JAC.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
<a href="https://www.musicinafrica.net/directory/siya-charles" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Siya “Jazzmatic” Charles</a> is a tenor/ bass trombonist, composer and arranger based in New York City. An alumnus of the University of Cape Town’s South African College of Music, she has worked with the likes of the late Hugh Masekela, Jimmy Dludlu, Nduduzi Makhathini, American/Costa Rican trombonist Luis Bonilla, trombonist Steve Turre, bassist Endea Owens, saxophonist Chad “LB” Lefkowitz Brown, and Grammy Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. Siya has won the jazz component of the Fine Music Radio Bursary, as well as the 1st Emirates Pursuit of Jazz Competition. She has performed in the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, Grahamstown Jazz Festival, Arcevia Jazz Feast (Italy), Stockholm Jazz Festival (Sweden), Kongsberg Jazz Festival (Norway), Blue Note Jazz Club (USA), Birdland Jazz Club (USA), Dizzy’s Jazz Club (USA), Calabar Jazz Festival (Nigeria), Standard Bank Acacia Jazz Festival (Moçambique), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland) and the Jazz is Back Festival (Croatia).
After many years of serving as a reliable sideman, she has established her newly formed musical collective titled: "The Siya Charles Sextet", featuring some of South Africa’s finest jazz musicians. The compositions and arrangements of The Siya Charles Sextet are inspired by classic jazz, South African jazz, the bebop and post-bop era, as well as Brazilian jazz.
Siya is currently completing her Masters in Music degree in jazz studies at the world- renowned Juilliard School. She is a FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar laureate, Jerome L. Greene Fellow and National Arts Council scholarship recipient.

Hannah began a personal journey toward greater self-awareness and healing in 2021. Life events, as well as aspects of mindfulness meditation, are reflected in her insightful and beautiful poetry. The Still Together Mindfulness Meditation Community is grateful for Hannah's recitation of her original poetry, which she offers as part of occasional meditation sessions. Make sure to stroll down and enjoy the beloved strawberry shortcakes on the lawn of First Baptist Church on Main Street!
