Barack Obama Wins Rhode Island

Voters in Rhode Island on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 4 Electoral votes.

Barack Obama won Rhode Island’s 4 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. The Wall Street Journal along with the Associated Press has called the race in Rhode Island declaring Obama the winner. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Rhode Island. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.  The economy was a key issue for many voters in the state.

Voter turnout has been strong in North Kingstown this morning since polls opened at 7 a.m.  At Davisville Middle School, about 50 people were waiting outside around 11 a.m. today waiting to get inside the building to vote. Once inside, another 30 (or more) people were waiting in line to cast their ballot. "I waited about 45 minutes before I voted," said Evan Charello. According to Bill Maccarone (a campaign worker for Steve Campo), "Quite a few people saw the line and turned around." Earlier this morning, one of the voting machines at the school went down, which caused further delays, said poll worker Richard August. Though voter turnout is always higher during a presidential election …

Rhode Island state law allows people who have not registered to vote to cast a ballot of the top office – in E.G., go to Swift.

For all those super procrastinators out there who didn't register to vote by the deadline, you can still vote for president on Election Day.  According to Rhode Island General Law 17-1-3, people who missed the voter registration dealine may vote for president/vice president only at their local Board of Canvassers on Election Day.  In North Kingstown, you can vote for the president and vice president at Town Hall (80 Boston Neck Road) on Tuesday, November 6, during regular polling hours (7 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
