Every mother needs support during childbirth. A doula provides both support and experience to help ease the stress of childbirth. Learn about the services DoRI (Doulas of Rhode Island) provides mother-to-be during a reception tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Cross Mills Public Library in Charlestown, 4417 Old Post Road, Charlestown. Doulas are women experienced in childbirth who provide advice, information, emotional support and physical comfort to a mother before, during and just after childbirth. FEMA and the FCC will conduct the first national test of the Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) today at 2 p.m. The system test is the first of its kind designed to broadcast a nationwide message to the American public. The three-minute test will run concurrently on all radio and TV band stations. FEMA officials noted it is only a test, even if the test message on TV does not indicate that it is just a test. The Davisville Middle School boys' soccer team team takes on Portsmouth in a semi-final match today at 3 p.m. at Ocean State Soccer, 650 Stony Lane. The winner of today's tilt books a trip to the Rhode Island championship game. There is no charge for the game, and all are invited to cheer on the local boys.
Check out some local acts at Rhody's Got Talent, featuring up to 12 University of Rhode Island students/student groups who will showcase talents such as singing, dancing, juggling and more. The show takes place in Edwards Auditorium on the URI campus, 2600 Kingstown Road, Kingston, tonight at 6:30. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Maintain your independence and remain nehind the wheel as long as it's safe. AARP is helping with just that. This afternoon at North Kingstown Senior and Human Services at Beechwood, 44 Beach St., the AARP is offering a newly redesigned four-hour driving safety course.  This program is open to individuals 50 and older. Class will begin at 1:30 p.m. and a break will be provided. Between trick-or-treats tonight, be sure to bring the family by The Village at South County Commons, 50 S. County Commons Way, for a family-friendly Halloween party form 5 to 7 p.m. The party will incude live music, pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, games, theatrical performances and, of course, candy. Bring a blanlet and bundle up for some outdor fun. And don't forget to wear your costume. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative get-ups.

Want to help make North Kingstown a healthier community? The Town of North Kingtown, in conjunction with the West Bay Family YMCA, kicks off its Healthy Places by Design initiative tonight at the Cold Spring Community Center at 7 p.m. The project stems from a grant the town received from the Department of Health. The grant allows the town to develop a program that will improve walkability, safety, recreation options, transportation choices, access to healthy foods and/or limit access to tobacco products. If you're a student athlete at North Kingstown High School, did you know that a single cigarette can cost you a game? Or, that an alcoholic beverage can leave you on the bench for two? According to the school's chemical health policy, underage drinking and drug/tobacco use can come with some stiff penalties. All first-time athletes or club participants and their parents must attend tonight's presentation on the school's chemical health policy.Learn more about the policy here.
