Who's Running For Council and School Committee This Year?

Check out the list of candidates who've filed for North Kingstown seats.

As the 2012 election season heats up, the pool of candidates for North Kingstown's town council and school committee are racking up after last week's filing date.

The school committee has three of its seven seats up for grabs – and six candidates seeking a spot on the table come December. Terms for members Lynda Avanzato, Melvoid Benson and Dick Welch are all expiring this year. Though both Avanzato and Benson will seek re-election, Welch is setting his sights on a spot on the town council this year instead. Kenneth Carter, the former longtime state representative who was ousted from his spot in the General Assembly by Republican Doreen Costa in 2010, has also declared his candidacy for a spot on the school committee.

The town council, on the other hand, as whopping 15 candidates vying for five seats. There will be at least two new faces on the council as current members Charlie Stamm and Chuck Brennan will not run again for their seats. Check below for a list of this year's candidates so far (courtesy of the North Kingstown Board of Canvassers).

Oh Happy Day....could not be more pleased to see Kevin Maloney and Colin O'Sullivan's names listed for TC. Two men who possess the qualities we need. Intelligence, selflessness, civic mindedness. Delighted to see they chose to run as independents. Being free from the constraints of party ties will be just what the doctor ordered for NK.

O'Sullivan & Maloney would be a fantastic and refreshing voice on the TC.

Seeing O'Sullivan and Maloney on the list is great news! Each is an impressive candidate, and if both are elected we could see some positive changes on the TC.

Great Suggestion. I few ques. I'd like to understand where each candidate stands. When/where/what education background. Professional experience/achievements. Motivation for running. What do they identify as the top five issues facing our community. Top five goals. Thier vision for the future of NK. Each individual's personal life guiding principle.

What a slate for us to choose from. Is the Town getting environmental credits from the State for recycling old candidates? Maybe during this cycle maybe more notice will go out for voting on Town matters.

Finally a slate to be excited about! We've seen what our town's Democrats and Republicans have given us. Now,we have an opportunity to see what some honest independent thinkers can accomplish.Colin O'Sullivan,
Kevin Maloney, and Rick Thompson have demonstrated their concern for North Kingstown's residents and our quality of life. I believe they will continue to work tirelessly to preserve the town we chose to live in. They have my vote!

What is Ken Carter doing running for School Committee? A Rep. to school committee post? I think someone needs to talk to him. He brings nothing but tired politics to the table.

C'mon Watch surely you jest!
Everybody knows that Ceresi is just trying to distance himself from the Benson blow-up that he and Avanzato created. They destroyed the Dems in NK. He's no independent, please give me a break, even you must sometimes admit the truth.
There are only four true independents in that line-up. The rest are either retreads or party shills taking up space.

I was kidding, Larry has an excellent decision track record. I challenge you to CITE otherwise. Be specific. I always speak the truth, so CITE examples when I didnt. And finally, mister/mrs nonspecific, CITE the "retreads" and "shills" you talk about.

Huh? That looks like conspiracy theory nonsense to me. I'm seeing a man who has won two elections, served well on our school board starting with ousting that POS Halley and keeping costs down while maintaining smooth operations all around. No scandals. Ceresi has done a good job, and now he would like to run for town council. I say good luck and I'm sure he'll do a great job there too.

No scandals!! This is the same Ceresi who bullied a student because he didn't like what the kid wrote about him and was recently in the news for a domestic conflict. Are we talking about the same "candidate"?

What we really need is to elect people who are strategic thinkers, we do not need people serving that "just do the do"
This community deserves a shot in the arm. We have so many great assets. What we have to do is to figure out a way to market those assets so that we will attract new home owners, businesses, and tourists. Although I harp on the sewer additions, even in a down economy it is all of our responsibilities to get on the band wagon and create some awareness for this wonderful community.
Who is going to step to the plate?

Quote from Dick Welch: "I’ve owned my own construction company for the past 25 years and have never once had to hire an attorney and never once went to court."
There is a reason for this. Read on. I hired Dick (Richard) Welch aka Apple Construction to do a huge renovation for me in Wakefield, RI in 2004. We had to ask him to "cease construction work on our property" because of the substandard quality of the work, the slow rate of progress, outright errors, and the lack of close supervision of subcontractor's work. Even worse and more importantly we also discovered that we paid for materials and work that was not delivered and/ or not completed, billed twice for same items, and grossly overcharged.
We had several construction professionals review the work he had done and a lot of the work needed to be torn out and redone. In the end Dick Welch, Richard Welch aka Apple Construction cost us approx. $50, 000. We tried to re-coup some of our losses through legal venues (i.e. sue him) but we discovered that his guy had ALL of his assests (cash, checking, houses, business, etc.) in his wife's name! We couldn't touch him - - - - This may explain why he has not been in court for his construction business!

No court case. No real name used. Nothing proven here. And there is a contractor registration board and Dick's insurance company for remediation, so there IS a channel. I call this BEE ESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL @ ToNKa & pfitzmaurice. I'm calling shenanigans on this story because it doesn't make a lick of sense and is based on a preschooler's knowledge of how companies are structured and how our legal system works.

First of all, If you hired Apple Construction you wouldn't be able to sue Dick Welch. You would sue Apple Construction. That's one of the main reasons companies incorporate or at the very least become an LLC. At that point it doesn't matter who has the assets because you can only go after the companies assets. If the situation was truly as described you could have easily sued.

Hmmmm. Who to believe ... who to believe. A highly-scrutinized public representative making an easily verifiable statement or an anonymous poster on a blog?

I'm not even a Democrat but this kind of silliness just makes us all look bad.

Melvoid Benson running for anything is just ludacris! Whatever this woman may have done in the past, in whatever capacity, is just that...in the past. She can no longer serve the students, faculty, parents and taxpayers of North Kingstown in a competent manor. Just this year she asked questions about plans for the second floor at DES. There is no second floor. Some of her derogatory comments and questions to people making presentations in front of the committee are just embarrassing. Let's hope that people wake up and don't just go by name recognition. She may have been great once, but it's time for her to go. This is not the year to vote uninformed!

I agree Daffodillgirl, Voters need to take a good long look at her record. Just watch some of the last few SC meetings and watch her, listen to her. Her best years have come and gone. It is time for her to hang it up. The same with Ken Carter. He needs to find something to occupy his final years...and the does not include being a member of the School committee. If he had any "best" years, they were long, long ago.

She is a tired liberal that needs to hang it up. Constant requests for reading a motion, endless bloviating has slowed down the progress of this board. The voters need to clean house and get some fresh new faces here. Too polarized.

I hope Carter AND benson win. They can join Mudge and we can make the SC meetings pay per view! Before long Welch will have a massive coronary, and that show can charge double! Ceresi will get up to flee, but will end up flat on his bad back, helpless, and he'll have a stroke. All the while monotone-kim will be droning on....

I cannot wait!

If you check with the RI Secretary of State you will find that what Dick Welch calls his construction company "Apple Construction Corp" - is actually not a corporation at all. True for RI Contractor's Registration Board.
