What Business Would You Open in NK?
Your imagination is the only limit, what would you open in North Kingstown?
Imagine you had the tools and resources at your disposal - what business would you like to open in North Kingstown? What would work in the community?
With our "Up to You" series, we've asked North Kingstown residents what they would do with vacant buildings throughout town. Many have called for an upscale restaurant. Others have wanted a Target, Sam's or Costco, especially in the vacant Lowe's building in Quonset. Personally, I wish North Kingstown had a movie theater or small venue to see musical performances and/or plays.
If you could open any type of business in town, what would it be? If you have a specific vision for a specific spot in town, even better!
Tell us in the comments.

The old Theatre: I know I'm just dreaming...but, how cool would it be to have a "Cable Car Cinema" style movie house that could also be available for acting groups to utilize, business orgs, etc...that was also a Pub (and I'd want to move Updike's Newtowne Coffee there) and a business development center with offices upstairs and collaborative work spaces plus a couple of very cool condos facing the water...oh to dream!

And, maybe we could turn the old Wickford Elementary building into a space similar to Hope Artiste Village with mixed living condos, studios, offices, etc...again I think we need a cool pub/coffee house to be the meeting place?

Two great ideas Tuni. Another would be for Wickford El to be developed as a business incubator.

I'd like to see the building behind RiteAid turned into a cafe featuring indoor/outdoor tables (year-round), free wireless, recycled magazines, chowder always, extended hours, early- evening jazz ensembles (ending by10pm). At the least, even a Starbucks would bring some ambience to the waterfront.
There should be a launch service(s) for seasonal boaters and evening harbor tours (lived here almost my entire life and never putt-putted around the harbor on a precious summer's night).
Re-open (Ryan's) as a general store where convenience items (for the boaters) plus manufacturers of RI products like DeCiantis ice cream, Kenyon's, Del's, and the Autocrat folks are selling their wares in addition to RI arts and crafts.
The prior suggestion of reviving the Wickford Theatre idea is a great one: just imagine "Hitchcock, Godfather, or James Bond" weekends with parking (hopefully), at the school where vendors of great food can park their trucks (Narragansett Beach does this every Wednesday night through October). Great food at reasonable prices.
Wickford has great potential and it has not capitalized on its site since the old "Top of the Dock" was in full swing-such fun back then as people melded with the boaters and others who came from all over RI!

I would like to see a general store, not a grocery store but like cracker barrels gift shop, with a pot belly stove n a big old pickle barrel, where friends could met and grab a coffee, munch a pickle and have donated items from families in town, with their names and what the picture is of hanging up etc and could even have weekly guess what this is or where it was for a free coffee or something. Just wishing remember going to a place with my grandfather as a kid n being amazed at all the stuff. Course in those days people used the things hanging up!

I'd second the conversion of Wickford Marketplace into a nice country store. The previous incarnation was good in theory but about as characterless and tacky as anyone could imagine. I wasn't surprised when it didn't stick around.
I'd also love some more cafes down in Wickford such as the Beehive Cafe in Bristol. I love Beach Rose but some more variety would get me down there more often at lunch time. Hopefully the Alex and Ani cafe will help in this regard.

A boardwalk amusement park at Quonset! i never had the chance to visit Rocky Point.
Pool - Hockey Rink - Skate Park-
We now have the indoor sports building. Hopefully, a sporting village can pop up in that area. We have an Olympic medalist in swimming, and we don't even have a pool? I noticed a lot of families in the Dave's with kids wearing soccer uniforms the other day, so it seems like things are going well over there.

a basketball // flagfootball sports building like the one on the base geared towards soccer, we have a great basketball program with no place for the teams to get together when ever they want and practice, schools closed, can't play outside when it's cold on the courts at wilson,

All the great ideas for nice dining in North Kingstown are wonderful, but we will not have a restaurant scene here until we have a real sewer system. Run the sewer lines into Wickford, all the way down Route 1 and 1A, and tie in the high school while we're at it. When something seems like a great idea but it hasn't happened yet, there is usually a logical reason for it , and this is it.
