Two NK Residents Dead In Rollover Crash In EG

East Greenwich police confirm that all four occupants of the truck that crashed early Sunday morning were from North Kingstown.

Two are dead and two are hospitalized after a pickup truck with four passengers hit a utility pole on Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich and rolled over. The accident happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday morning. The car was heading south on Shippeetown from Division Street.

According to EG Fire Chief Peter Henrikson, two people were ejected from the truck. One of those was pronounced dead on the scene, the other was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

"We had to spend a considerable amount of time extricating the two others," he said. The truck was upsidedown and the cab was crushed. One of the those inside the cab was pronounced dead at the scene. The other had to be extricated.

"It was the most difficult extrication I’ve seen in all my years with the district," said Henrikson. Because of the difficulty of the rescue, a Life Star helicoptor was called in from Connecticut.

"One man still alive was transported by Coventry Rescue to the Center of New England," said Henrikson. There the man was taken by Life Star to Rhode Island Hospital.

First on the scene was off-duty EG fire fighter Michael Monaghan, who lives nearby.

Indentifications have not be released pending notification of families, according to Sgt. Stephen Garrett of the EG Police. He did say that all four people involved in the crash were from North Kingstown and that speed was a factor in the crash.

I knew Mike as a good friend to my son. He and the boys would spend most weekends at our home drinking energy drinks, eating junk food and playing video games most weekends.

While this is clearly a personal lose for myself and my family I cannot imagine the toll it must be taking on his good family and I wish them only the best during this impossibly difficult time.

Finally, I had dinner last night with my kids. That alone is not normally a powerful statement but given the circumstances that have unfolded, I could not help but feel so grateful and sad at the same time that I was able to share something that Mike's family will struggle to have again.

My prayers go to his family.

I remember those weekends. All good kids, and they all had so much fun there. They were quite well-known to the man at the Bestway for their love of energy drinks! Our prayers go out as well.
