Two Dead In Rollover On Shippeetown

The accident happened at 3:51 a.m.; two other occupants hospitalized; speed a factor, police say

Two are dead and two are hospitalized after a pickup truck with four occupants hit a utility pole on Shippeetown Road and rolled over. The accident happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday morning. The car was heading south on Shippeetown from Division Street.

According to Fire Chief Peter Henrikson, two people were ejected from the truck. One of those was pronounced dead on the scene, the other was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

"We had to spend a considerable amount of time extricating the two others," he said. The truck was upsidedown and the cab was crushed. One of the those inside the cab was pronounced dead at the scene. The other had to be extricated.

"It was the most difficult extrication I’ve seen in all my years with the district," said Henrikson. Because of the difficulty of the rescue, a Lifestar helicoptor was called in from Connecticut.

"One man still alive was transported by Coventry Rescue to the Center of New England," said Henrikson. There the man was taken by Lifestar to Rhode Island Hospital.

First on the scene was off-duty fire fighter Michael Monaghan, who lives nearby.

Indentifications have not be released pending notification of families, according to Sgt. Stephen Garrett of the EG Police. He did say that all four people involved in the crash were from North Kingstown and that speed was a factor in the crash.

Police said they would be releasing the names as well as more information about the crash sometime today. They said they wanted to make sure extended family is notified before it hits the press.
