SOUND OFF: Is November Too Early to Decorate for Christmas?

When do you start decorating for Christmas?

Christmas music is already being played around the clock on the radio and at least several North Kingstown residents have already "decked the halls."

A few readers and some friends have informed me that they've seen neighbors putting up their Christmas lights and other holiday decorations already.

While we applaud their enthusiasm for the holidays, we want to know when you plan to dig the Christmas boxes out of the attic. Do you wait until the day after Thanksgiving or the week before? Tell us in the comments section below!

If you want to go back a few decades, the traditional decoration time for Christmas was the first week of December and the turning off of lights on New Years Day. Going back to the old days in Europe, they would decorate the tree on Christmas eve and take it down on Christmas night. Back in those days, they used live candles on the tree.
People need to show some restraint from decorating too early. While retailers keep advancing the start of the season for commercial purposes, it should not influence the people to do the same. I believe that people get turned off to the season when Xmas lights start showing up after Halloween.

I agree with all previous comments. Don't let the radio & retailers push you into an early Christmas.

Absoultely no earlier than the weekend after Thanksgiving. I am all for taking advantage of a warm, sunny day in November to put the outdoor lights up, but they should not be lit until after Thanksgiving. I always tell my kids...putting Christmas lights up in early November is not a sign of having a lot of Christmas spirit. I believe, it just might mean having far less.

We have a rule that we don't watch "Christmas Vacation" until after Thanksgiving dinner. Any time after that is fair game.
