POLL: VP Biden's Memo Misspells 'Rhode Island' — Forgivable?
Vote in our poll and sound off in the comments.
Critics and supporters alike were taken aback Tuesday when a White House memo describing Vice President Joe Biden's travels this week mentioned an upcoming visit to New England.
According to Tuesday's Washington Post article, an advisory from Biden's White House office states that the vice president plans to go to Boston, Manchester and then "Providence Road Island" on Thursday to attend campaign events.
Does this oversight upset you or will you add it to the "No one knows anything about Rhode Island" file? You know, the one that says RI is part of New York? Vote and tell us in the comments.

agree, parents make good school districts more than anything else. If you don't like your public school move to a town where parents are educated and engaged.

Well, he didn't write it, his staffer did. Still, who can't spell the name of a state? Look it up! By the way, any lame excuse relating to spell-check or auto-correct doesn't hold up. Oh, and the Biltmore was spelled Builtmore.

It's Rogues Island; remember? If that staffer didn't proofread before, I'll bet he does now. Hopefully, that non scientific poll is in jest.

Of course it's forgivable - it's a Democrat gaffe. If it had been a Republican - it'd be all over every news station, bashing the heck out of them.

It is ridiculous that someone in that position and that much schooling can't spell. Some type of an apology would be nice. And how about some respect for our state!!!

Proves that you cannot rely on the spellcheckers. I doubt old Joe wrote that himself but in the end, is this REALLY a big deal? No!

I wouldn't have been so upset if it had been mis-spelled as "Rode Island" because that at least could have been explained as an accidentally dropped "h". But "Road" Island just showcases an ignorance of the true spelling. Yes, it could have been the result of careless spell-checking but someone should proof read these things before they go out.
I also agree that if a Republican VP had done the same thing, it would have been a bigger story!

This is the island of lemmings. They vote every year for criminals then complain about the state of our state. Spelling who needs spelling as long as you can read your own name on one of your state checks for doing nothing. Welcome Veci Prezidant Bedon I hope youus enzos yousuself hair in Rhod Iland

Even the republicans misspell; Rick Santorum recently spelled a town in Minnesota as Bimidji vs. Bemidji.
Pierre Fontaine

To be fair though, I might have a problem spelling Bimidji. I've never heard of it before and you certainly couldn't figure out how to spell it phonetically. However, there really is no excuse for the mis-spelling if someone on Santorum's staff is doing their job properly.
It seems to me that mis-spelling Rhode Island is a mistake on a totally other level. Rhode Island is a state of the union one of the original thirteen colonies! Rhode Island has a place in US history and is certainly part of the US population's public consciousness, even if it is an extremely small part.
I do believe that this mistake is the result of someone over-zealously using a spell checker while compiling the document in question. The fact that no one proof-read this document and corrected the mistake beforehand points to a certain lack of finesse and respect, in my humble opinion.

Obviously it's 'forgivable' and of itself not worth discussion.
However it does reinforce a more significant point- the VP becomes the party's obvious choice for presidential candidate once the current Pres can no longer run.. Sen. Biden is not electable as a President. (Whether that's fair or not isn't the issue.)
Does Pres Obama keep him as VP, or select someone like Mrs. Clinton who could make a good run for the Presidency in four years?

If Dick Cheney (more specifically his staff) had made the same mistake if he was here campaigning for Carcieri, it would be a much bigger story here in RI. No question - the Projo would have had a field day . That said, putting political affiliations aside, is it really a big deal? No. Just another in the long list of Bidenisms...

He's got writers/secretaries. It most likely wasn't him. However, it is inexcusable that anyone working for the government misspell a state name, in my opinion.

Not enough. It's inexcusable for anyone who graduated from grammar school to misspell a state name. Especially when the state is 1) the smallest, 2) one of the original 13 colonies, and 3) is not part of New York.

Ross Stapleton-Gray

To be fair, Quayle's gaffe was particularly noteworthy, as he was pointedly "correcting" a child who'd spelled "potato"... you've got an amusing word, a kid, and an adult taking pains to draw attention to the situation... a perfect storm of goofballitude.
Biden is also regularly lampooned on Saturday Night Live as an overeager buffoon, so he's getting his turn.

Anyone who took to the first option clearly doesn't know how day to day political publicity works. There is very little chance that Biden ever saw, let alone wrote, that memo.
Should the staffer/intern have been more careful and relied less on spell check?
You bet. I'm sure that the person responsible was either reprimanded or replaced.
Frankly, I wish that the populace would get this riled up over just about anything else in the political sphere rather than speculating as to if someone in office may or may not have been responsible for a typo on a memo. Have an opinion here, by all means; this is just mine. I simply implore you to raise your voices on issues that matter as well!

Yes Erin, that's the problem. We give passes to our elected officials. NO MORE PASSES... Please... If you take command you are in charge, you take the HIT for everything that comes out of your office.... Everything... Last election we elected a "rock star". We can't afford to do it again.

I stand by my original statement. Forgiveness of a typo likely written by a staffer whose JOB it is to make sure that they don't occur (see also: delegation) is hardly giving an elected official a "pass." Like I said, reprimand or even fire the staffer/intern.
There are INFINITELY more important things than a typo that we should be indignant, disgusted, and outright unforgiving about with regards to those in all corners of government.

I'm not saying that Biden doesn't have a certain reputation. He does and I sigh every time something silly comes out from him directly, as I do with anyone.
However, it should be pointed out that this country has shown tolerance and even preference to "down home" behaviors over what is perceived as lofty and educated speech in the past. The favorable opinion of Bush Jr's demeanor has shown us that.
Is it ok? No. All I'm saying is to a) put blame where it belongs, b) be fair in judgement about the same issues regardless of which side of the aisle someone is on, and c) judge a bit more on important actions than frivolous words.
