Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is hosting a "holiday tree" lighting next week, despite objections.
Holiday tree or Christmas tree?
Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is calling the 17-foot spruce tree that will be lit inside the Statehouse rotunda a "holiday tree," even though the General Assembly passed a resolution calling it a "Christmas tree" earlier this year.
According to The Providence Journal, the governor is defending his use of the term, saying it honors Rhode Island's heritage as a refuge for religious tolerance three centuries ago. Some state lawmakers criticize his position, and an Associated Press story on the issue has been picked up across the country. News outlets such as The Washington Post, MSNBC and the Huffington Post have all run with the story.
The governor is inviting all Rhode Islanders to join him and his wife for the annual lighting next Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m.

You have to wonder if the Governor has actually *read* the Royal Charter from which he is fond of referencing or merely has his staff get cherry-picked quotes from the document. Really, the Royal Charter also says that the people may "win and invite" the "native Indians of the country to the knowledge and obedience of the only true God and Saviour of mankind."

Chafee is a boob. It is a Christmas tree. December 25th is the federal holiday: Christmas. A tree is a symbol of the holiday. It is for Christmas, no other holiday. Stop trying to be so politically correct.

Where was the criticism when Carcieri used this term? What's the meaning of "Christmas tree" in Rhode Island? Just an irrelevant (to governing ability) issue being used to further political agendas. Now THAT's sad. Go find something else to pick on the man about and leave my tree alone!
