Just another example of cars driving at extreme speeds down Annaquatucket. My thoughts and prayers go out to the woman's family but as a resident and regular runner on Annaquatucket, I think there should be speed bumps put in to slow people down. There have been multiple occasions where I have had to jump out of the way of a speeding car to avoid being hit.

Just curious, where it said in the report that speeding was involved? I don't remember seeing anything about that?

I believe the conclusion that speed was involved is inescapable as the jaws-of-life had to be used to extricate the victim. That doesn't usually happen at 25 MPH.

I used to live on Annaquatucket Rd down by the HS, and always thought that it was a dangerous road to start with. It is narrow and hard to navigate especially if your speeding. My heart and prayers go out to the womans family.

This is the same debate as we had on Doug Roth. In fact both issues are valid. In the Roth case, another NK 40-something left behind a family he dearly loved, but that doesnt blank out the conversation about a public memorial for a public official with a less than stellar official record. Two separate issues, both right. In THIS case, this individual did not plan to leave this world, and it is a true tragedy for the family, extended family, and friends. But that doesnt blank out the opportunity to discuss safe driving!
So, lets stop being shy about controversial issues, because to allow the passing of someone to obscure what could be a useful conversation that in this case may save a life, would needlessly add another dimension to the loss.

Any excuse to trash the dead.. Are you trying to say Doug PLANNED to "leave this world"? Doug being being taken from us wasn't a TRUE tragedy?
I think Samantha banned you before. Hopefully she will again. You make me sick.

Dear raven and tired, I think you misunderstood. I meant that the tragic loss in the car accident was so sudden, that poor victim had no idea that she would have that happen that day. And these losses should not preclude discussion on related issues we could benefit from. I had seen the Roth issues in past posts (which I refrained from commenting) and people trying to stifle any and all conversation and that is wrong, and it seems the same people (you and tired) may be doing the same thing now in resisting the important related topic of safety and sidewalks for that road, which I know well. Please stop attacking anything that moves when free speech is not to your liking, it's rude, frankly. The only reason I brought it up is because YOU dont seem to want people discussing anything that is not to your liking, on a free blog, and on Veterans Day no less.

What does Doug Roth's plaque have to do with safety and sidewalks?

raven, its what some peeps are doing here (several, not just you), they say you cant discuss sidewalks because there was a fatality and I saw in past posts the same thing with the roth plaque, some (you too I think) said not to discuss the merits of the plaque because someone passed on. respectfully, I disagree that when someone dies we cant discuss the issue. I think this is a great time to get people talking about sidewalks, and from what I could see between all the vitriol, there was nothing wrong with discussing the merits of the plaque - which some say, and I agree, should only be for those whose public service was exceptional, not exceptionally bad. in short, when someone dies, life goes on for all the rest of us. if reading others' opinions bothers you that much, you dont have to read online comment pages at all. i mean, why upset yourself and get all worked up? its just on opinion and another, thats all.

Where did someone object to discussing sidewalks? I love free speech. I have no problem with people expressing opinions. I just don't understand your obsession with Doug Roth. We got signatures. The plaque was approved. It's over. If this was an article about the plaque or Doug's record I would have no problem with your posts about him. Now you are calling me name too. Please just stop.

I am so sorry for this woman and her family. This is an awful tragedy, regardless of the circumstances. I live off Annaquatucket and drive the road several times daily. I can't believe the town has not put sidewalks in. There are countless runners, walkers, bicyclists, etc. young and old traveling on that street. Kids walking home from the high school, middle school, etc. Kids on the middle school and high school track and other sports teams running in groups. Not to mention the countless young people walking down to Jitters after school. Please, NK, please extend the sidewalks on Annaquatucket down to the Oak Hill Tavern. Even better, all the way up to the gulf gas station intersection as well. There is SO much foot traffic here, at all times day or night. It is so dangerous and I would hate for an incident to happen before we take action. Again, very sorry to have lost a member of our community this way. :/

I'll jump on the sidewalks bandwagon too. It would be kind of a big job but it's needed. Lots of kids walk that road to and from school AND high school students and commuters going too fast, which you will never fix fully. Time to get them separated via nice raised sidewalks. And maybe that stump should have a short wooden guardrail to deflect a car too.

Excellent post, Sheriff...horrible that someone lost their life; amazing no one was coming in the opposite direction as is usually the case. I wish the School Dept would reconsider the practice of allowing the track teams to run on this road. All the years of watching them run IN the road most afternoons makes me think this is a disaster waiting to happen.

This is an article about a women's tragic death. She was a mom, a sister, a niece, a neighbor, an aunt, & a dear friend. be respectful. if you have issues about speeding, sidewalks, or anything else, take it up with the town. this is not the forum. those who make the decisions most likely are not reading your comments, her children and loved ones are...

You are right Natalie. I was just talking about the danger on that road at night. A swerve to avoid hitting a person or even an animal. It could happen to any one of us, Even traveling at 25 or 30 mph. My prayers go out to her family and friends.

raven, I too am sorry for your loss. I am just devastated at the loss of my friend. I agree that these issues about sidewalks and speed "should" be discussed and change "should" happen. Maybe it can be done in the names of those who lost their lives. I just feel that the discussion should be done in an article that is written about speed and sidewalks, not in an article that is announcing someone's tragic passing. Let the spotlight be on the beautiful funny loving woman who left this world too soon and left in her wake a shattered family. Let the focus be on her life, those she touched, and nothing else. I am not trying to spark debate, I am just trying to honor a friend.

I live next door to the spot where this terrible accident happened. The minute I saw her car, I started to cry, and to pray for her, for her family and friends. It was bad. That curve is awful, and unfortunately, not the first time someone has hit that stump or rear-ended cars turning into side roads right after the curve. It's dangerous. I see kids from NKHS and many, many town residents running, walking and biking on Annaquatucket every day, and it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian gets killed. I have spoken up about sidewalks to the town to no avail, and decided Saturday night to put my foot down and make something happen. Guardrails, sidewalks, flashing signs - something. This should never have happened. My heart goes out to Tina's loved ones. Please know that something good will come out of this eventually. Her death will prevent others, I promise you that.

Hey folks,
This seems to be a pretty hot topic, so I went ahead and made a separate article about the safety issues of Annaquatucket. I'm also asking for residents to name other roads that they also consider dangerous for pedestrians, bicyclists, runners, etc.
Feel free to move the discussion over here: http://northkingstown.patch.com/articles/which-nk-roads-need-sidewalks
